Conway was instrumental in ranking Faulkner County No. 19 in CNNMoney’s most recent Best Places to Live list titled “Where the jobs are.”
From 2010 to 2012 Faulkner County had a job growth rate of 9.2 percent.
The growth that this study shows is coming from a variety of businesses in a number of different sectors, said Jamie Gates, senior vice president of the Conway Area Chamber of Commerce. “We’ve seen businesses move here from other parts of the country like Inuvo, seen new businesses grow and seen existing businesses invest and expand,” he said.
With three colleges and a median age of 26, a young, well-educated population contributes to the job growth with many post-grads finding their first white-collar job within the county.
White-collar jobs on the rise include local technology startup Privacy Star and Acxiom, a data, technology and marketing company that also got its start in Conway.
CNNMoney also cited the decision by Internet marketing and technology company, Inuvo Inc., to relocate its corporate headquarters from New York to Conway this year as a sign of continued job growth. According to the article, the move is expected to create 50 new jobs.
Brad Lacy, president and CEO of the Conway Area Chamber of Commerce, said in spite of recent layoffs at Hewlett-Packard, Conway and Faulkner County’s local economy is strong and rapidly growing.
“In Faulkner County, our gains tend to outweigh our losses,” he said. “We will continue to work hard to grow the local economy through recruiting new companies, developing an attractive environment for startups, and expanding our existing industries.”
This marks the second consecutive year Faulkner County has appeared on CNNMoney’s list of the top 25 counties with the highest percentage of job growth. Last year’s list reported job growth over an 11-year timespan from 2000 to 2011. Faulkner County ranked No. 13 with a job growth rate of 35 percent.
“Job creation is the single most important social metric you can look at when measuring the health of a community,” Gates said. “People need and deserve economic opportunity and we’re blessed to have that at such a scale in Faulkner County.”
