License to drive

Stolen license plate lands one in jail.

Posted: March 20, 2013 - 8:13am

Conway police charged a man with theft by receiving when an officer ran a license plate and it came up with a different vehicle than the one it was on.

The officer on patrol at the Walmart parking lot March 18 noticed a black Pontiac Fiero, according to the police report. When the officer ran the license plate, it returned to a Ford Explorer and had been reported stolen.

The officer made contact with the occupants of the vehicle and explained that the license plate had been reported stolen.

The man in the car said he had taken the license plate off his nephew's vehicle because he had not been able to register his vehicle.

The man was charged with theft by receiving and was held pending a $665 bond. The passenger in the car was released from the scene.

800 cars (est)

800 cars on that parking lot. Wonder what was it that made it stand out above all the others ? Surely the police didnt go there to run every plate they saw. Just wondering and to be honest dont really care if they were "profiling" or not. I dont have a problem with profiling because well quite frankly it works. I just wonder what was the trigger that caused them to run that plate (other than it being a black Fiero) I imagine it was more based on the appearance of the driver/occupants.

Stand out?

Dude, it's probably the last running Fiero on the planet.

Either that or it wasn't running and people were circling it with jumper cables.

The only thing more exceptional would be a Renault Le Car. Those things broke when you walked past them in heavy boots.

I Remember This

Unpublished

From a movie along time ago may have been "Billy Jack" a cop was asked what the suspect did and the cop said "He made a furtive action" by reaching into his shirt pocket and then the cop was asked to show what he did.

Don't know why that stuck in my head except it made the cop look foolish.

License plate scanner

Wasn't CPD getting one of those license plate scanners that could scan any plates as it drove by? It doesn't sound like that was used in this case, but this reminded me of it.

After a few years

You develop what oldtimers call a gut feeling. Something just tells you to check that one.

I agree with the post above, they can run every tag on the parking lot but they will have a dispatcher who no longer likes them.
