The Village at Hendrix gets $91,500 grant

Grant money to improve Hendrix Creek Preserve

Posted: March 18, 2013 - 8:05pm

A $91,575 grant recently awarded to The Village at Hendrix will help go to enhancements for Hendrix Creek Preserve, an 18-acre creek restoration project within the development, according to a news release.

The Village applied for the grant from Walmart Stores, Inc.

The preserve is for recreational areas and storm-water management and filtration for a 500-acre watershed of developed land that includes the Walmart Super Center, according to the release. The grant will fund signs that explain the “purpose and biological features of the preserve and importance of water quality,” according to the release. The money will also fund collecting trash and planting native plants.

The additions will increase the educational value of the preserve to visitors, The Village’s Chief Operating Officer Lawrence Finn said in a news release.

“Not only will these initiatives expand the educational reach of Hendrix Creek Preserve, they will improve the beauty of the natural habitat and enhance the performance and ecology of the storm management system,” Finn said in the release.

"The money will also fund

"The money will also fund collecting trash and planting native plants."

Don't kid yourself - I would bet that almost the entire surplus of these monies will go towards TRYING to maintain that work that has currently been done by attempting to control the trash that is floating around the area.

I understand that they wanted to create a sort of bayou-wetland type natural area - but sometimes, there's a reason for development with pretty fountains and man-laid turf. It stops certain areas of Arkansas from looking like crap. Currently - the swamp at The Village looks like crap.

I'm not sure what their goal was - but this whole area would benefit from a good scour and planting out with fast-growing turf and fresh water.

It looks to me like they are

It looks to me like they are growing weeds on purpose. Leave it to the institutional hippie commune that is Hendrix to think that's attractive.

Not to Mention

Unpublished

Like a little game preserve for homeless people to have a little conclave.

Probably not the grant

The grant probably won't be used for maintenance unless it was explicitly part of the application (I didn't read the application). Wal-Mart is usually pretty specific about where its money goes and what it does, as far as grants go. However, Hendrix could fundraise and use other funding for maintenance.
