House passes bill to keep youths' aborted fetal tissue

Sponsor: tissue would give law enforcement evidence in case a girl was impregnated as a result of sexual abuse or statutory rape.

Posted: March 18, 2013 - 4:21pm

LITTLE ROCK — A bill that would require abortion providers to keep a sample of tissue from fetuses from juveniles has passed the Arkansas House.

The bill by Republican Rep. Charlene Fite of Van Buren cleared on an 88-0 vote.

Fite says keeping the tissue would give law enforcement evidence in case a girl was impregnated as a result of sexual abuse or statutory rape.

Under the bill, the State Crime Laboratory will set rules on the amount and type of tissue to be retained for DNA testing and procedures for chain of custody of evidence. The lab would also set procedures for proper disposal of the preserved tissue.

The bill goes to the Senate.

Except

that's not entirely true. See the final update here (http://www.arktimes.com/ArkansasBlog/archives/2013/03/12/state-lawmakers...).

I'm not defending this legislature, but at least they're not quite as uneducated as the Chronicle of Higher Education suggested back in 2011, which was the source of your article.

Pro-Incest Bill

This would make it illegal for a family member who is not a parent to take a teen out of state for an abortion. It would put grandma in jail for making sure her granddaughter doesn't have a daddy who is also her baby daddy.

Great moments in legislating

Great moments in legislating from The Natural 'Diamoron' State.

Arkansas is known throughout the country for its natural Arkie-Tea-Senate.

Maybe

Maybe the legislators could be required to provide a sample of brain tissue--if they had any.

What a big-government liberal.

You are such a big-government liberal. Here's these good legislators are working diligently to make government smaller and less intrusive, and you want to propose a blanket requirement such as this?

I would have been with you, but you want to test the men as well as the women. For shame.
