ASP investigating I-40 homicide

Posted: February 10, 2013 - 2:36pm

Arkansas State Police are investigating the early-morning homicide of a Conway man found shot in his pickup near Dave Ward Drive.

Troopers were dispatched just after 5 a.m. Sunday to a stretch of Interstate 40 west at mile marker 129 after callers reported what appeared to be a drunk driver and a wrecked black Nissan pickup.

The first trooper at the scene found the driver of the truck, identified as Jose Martinez, 31, of Conway, shot inside of the vehicle.

Martinez was transported by ambulance and later pronounced dead at a local hospital.

Preliminary information by special agents with the ASP Criminal Investigation Division indicate an unknown suspect pulled alongside Martinez’s truck and shot him.

Martinez’s body has been transported to the State Crime Laboratory for an autopsy to determine cause and manner of death.

Anyone with information on the wreck or homicide is asked to call ASP at (501) 618-8100.

why mention it?

a passerby assumed he was a drunk driver, upon closer observation, the police see that he has been shot.
Why is the word "drunk" even part of the story? I don't know this young man, I don't know his family....but if this was my family member, I'd be thinking "slander", wouldn't you?

ummm.... cause the caller

ummm.... cause the caller reported a drunk driver. That's why. It was in the report, so that was what made it into the news release.

Update

ASP officials said late Monday that investigators developed significant leads on Sunday and have continued to interview individuals throughout the day. I am hoping to get a more detailed follow-up tomorrow.

The reason that I reported the incidence of the use of the words "drunk driver" was because that was information provided to dispatch when the initial call was made. That is what the passerby observed. That was also the information that led the trooper to find the man. Those words were in no way written to imply that the victim was intoxicated at the time of the incident.

Megan, sometimes you just

Megan, sometimes you just can't win. Of course all of us that travel the highways should be able to tell a drunk driver from one who had been shot a weaving.

hello

Arkansas State Police detectives are investigating the first homicide in Conway this year after they found a man shot in his truck on the median of Interstate 40 early Sunday.

Thank you Captain Obvious

Yes that is what the ASP found and is investigating. Did you miss the part where someone called in a drunk driver on the interstate because they were swerving? The only way you could know the truth is if you were the shooter.

Hmmm, case closed. It's moi.

No doofus. I did not miss the

No doofus. I did not miss the swerving part in the original Cabin story.
It seems the man was shot while he was driving--even though we do not see mention of a bullet entry on the vehicle itself--which would account for the erratic driving witnessed, and then the car came to rest in the median of I-40.
I happened to drive by the scene on my way to work at 6am that morning and simply wondered what had happened.
