The Hendrix Players will present “Anatomy of Gray” by Jim Leonard at 7:30 p.m. on Nov. 7 and Nov. 9 and at 2 p.m. on Nov. 10 in Cabe Theatre.
The production will be directed by Virginia Smith, this year’s Murphy Visiting Theatre Director.
Smith recently completed her eighth year as the artistic director of the Nebraska Repertory Theatre and is the head of graduate and undergraduate Directing at University of Nebraska-Lincoln, where she runs the M.F.A. program in directing for stage and screen.
The cast includes Bryan Urban of Conway in the lead role as Galen Gray.
In this magical coming of age story set in Gray, Ind., in 1880, a summer storm answers the prayer of a 15 year-old girl when it drops a mysterious balloonist, a doctor, into isolated little Gray. June Muldoon has prayed for a doctor because her father just died, and she believes it’s because the community doesn’t have a healer.
Bored silly by her backwards little village, she is entranced by the unexpected tempest stirred up by the doctor’s new-fangled ideas about how germs, not sin, cause disease.
Change spins through Gray, shaking everyone with laughter, suspicion, wistful yearning, love, loss, and hope.
The performance, sponsored by the Hendrix College Department of Theatre Arts and Dance and the Hendrix-Murphy Foundation Programs in Literature and Language, is free and open to the public.
