Mother claims boy injured by school bus fire extinguisher

Posted: October 25, 2012 - 3:12pm

The mother of a 13-year-old Conway student contacted police on Wednesday after her son was allegedly injured by a fire extinguisher while riding a school bus.

The woman told police her son was riding Conway school bus #114 home from school when the bus driver reportedly struck a curb while making a turn, causing the fire extinguisher to fall off of its mount and into the seat next to the boy.

After a few seconds, the woman said the extinguisher allegedly exploded, covering the boy in chemicals. The woman also told police a piece of the extinguisher hit the boy in the head.

The mother reported that the bus driver provided no medical attention to any of the children on the bus who were affected by the explosion, and reportedly made the boy stay in his seat until he was dropped off at his home minutes later.

The woman said she took the boy to the hospital, where he was treated for a concussion and mild chemical burns.

According to a report, police photographed a small bump on the boy’s left temple, as well as some mild swelling where the chemicals made contact with the boy’s face.

In an e-mail on Wednesday, Dr. Greg Murry, superintendent of Conway Public Schools, claimed the fire extinguisher never left its bracket.

“For clarification, the fire extinguisher did not explode,” Murry wrote. “A girl pulled the pin on the fire extinguisher and then a boy trying to put the pin back in hit the handle a little bit and a small amount of the fire retardant leaked out.”

Murry said he is also unaware of anything that the bus driver “did or did not do” that would warrant school officials taking any disciplinary action against the driver.

Conway police reported the incident to the child abuse hotline. The investigation is ongoing.

Hmm

Does anyone know how much those school bus video cameras cost? I know they can't be cheap but with angry parents barging their way onto Conway school buses to confront alleged bullies and others claiming that a fire extinguisher exploded causing them injury it may be wise to bite the bullet and invest in them. It may really save their bacon one of these days.

Surely they can't be more than what they would pay an attorney to fend-off allegations.

Hey now!!

Don't give them any ideas for new databases. Afterall, according to a past editor, they are the most read items on the LCD website.

Easily proven with/without video

If the child indeed had a concussion, I would be willing to bet the extinguisher left it's mount.

Also the momma hen 'might' be playing it up a bit, but Murry sounds like he is most assuredly playing it down.

Yep...

...sounds like a case of "his story vs her story with the truth somewhere in the middle".

Correct

Because every concussion in the history of mankind was caused by fire extinguishers.

How about someone taking a look at the extinguisher on the bus? If it exploded as the boy stated then wouldn't it no longer be intact? If it had been discharged as Murry stated then wouldn't the gauge read less than full?

EXACTLY! I'm sure that the

EXACTLY! I'm sure that the school district has had the extinguisher in question inspected and its condition would have been noted by the technician. It would be very evident if in fact the extinguisher had exploded and / or how much of the dry chemical remains within. I can definitely see a young boy pulling a pin just for giggles - heck, I think I did once as a youth.

Dry extinguishers contain mono-ammonium phosphate, sodium bicarbonate, or potassium bicarbonate. I couldn't imagine any of these compounds causing a chemical burn.

true

a few years ago my oldest son thought it would be funny to spray his little brother in the face with a fire extinquisher. it's one of those moments i wish i had calmed down and taken a photo because it WAS HILARIOUS. but at that time i freaked out and threw him in the tub. it was a dry extinguisher. didn't even turn his skin pink and he's got very sensitive skin.
