Among reports recently released by the Conway Police Department:
• A woman at 1803 block of Clifton Street reported having been robbed at the intersection of Fendley Drive and Washington Avenue on Sunday while walking home from work. The woman said a man approached her on foot, asking first for directions and then for a cigarette. As she began to open her purse, the man reportedly grabbed it in an attempt to take it from her. The woman said she struggled with him over the purse, until she finally fell, causing the contents of the purse to spill on to the ground. The man then grabbed her wallet and ran north on Washington Avenue. The suspect is described as being a black male with shoulder-length dreadlocks, a baggy red shirt and blue jeans. The investigation is ongoing.
• A man was arrested on violation of omnibus DWI act after nearly colliding with an on-duty officer and failing a blood alcohol test. On Sunday night, a Conway police officer on patrol near Tyler and Clifton Streets reportedly had to brake abruptly to avoid collision with a car that pulled out in front of him at a stop sign. The officer intiated a traffic stop and noticed a strong odor of intoxicants coming from the driver. According to the report, the man’s eyes were bloodshot and his speech was slow and slurred. When the officer asked the man how much he had to drink, he reportedly replied, “not much.” The officer then noticed the smell of marijuana coming from the car. When asked about the odor, the man said he had no drugs in the car and he had not been smoking anything. As the man was exiting the vehicle, the officer noted he had trouble maintaining balance. The man attempted a field sobriety test, but was unable to follow instructions and could not balance. He was then placed under arrest for DWI. While taking inventory of the car, the officer noticed a green vegetable substance believed to be marijuana in the driver’s seat. He also found the same substance in the front passenger seat and in a small tin box in the console of the car. A glass pipe was also recovered from the console. A wrecker service took possession of the man’s car. At the police station, the man took a BAC test that resulted in a .193 reading. He was cited and transported to jail.
• A woman was treated at Conway Regional Medical Center on Sunday for injuries sustained after reportedly being battered at 201 block of Second Street. The woman told officers she was drinking with friends at the apartment complex, where upon leaving she was confronted in the parking lot by a group of girls who began using “rude, offensive language.” The woman said she kept walking to her car, but was grabbed by the arm by one of the women, who said, “Did you hear me, b****?” The woman reportedly pushed her away, but seconds later was confronted by a man who began punching her in the right eye and in the right cheek. The woman stated the beating continued even after he had knocked her down. The officer advised the woman to contact any friends who were witnesses to make statements regarding the incident. The investigation is ongoing.
