Guy

Hope everyone had a wonderful Christmas and a Very Safe Happy New Year! Christmas my family met at Gary’s new house and we just had barbecue and snack foods. My Mom Betty Griffith spent Christmas Eve night at Gary’s.
Sandy Dowdy and I spent Christmas Eve night with Jerry, Dana and Landon Dowdy. That was a treat for sure to watch a 4 year old getting all excited for Santa to arrive. I woke up at around 4:30 a.m. to let the dogs out an Landon jumped straight up from the bed and said “Nana you think Santa come yet?” I said not yet but I heard him down the street so I have to let the dogs out and back in and get back to bed or he won’t come to your house. He said “Hurry Nana and went back to sleep.” So sweet! From the mouths of babes. When his mom came in at 7:30 a.m. he jumped out of bed and ran to the living room and all he could say was AWESOME! And Elfie has gone back to the North Pole. What did I ever do before they blessed me with this darling grandson! I am truly blessed with my children, daughter in law, grandson and family!
I had visitors last week, my friend Sue Goad from Oklahoma came by for a visit and truly enjoyed visiting with her. Also Charlotte Mode and I had a long visit too. Haley, daughter of Jennifer Alford and her friend Kayla came over one day and spent the day and night with me. We watched movies or I should say I caved in at 11:30 p.m. to go to bed don’t know what time they went to bed. But I truly enjoyed having the girls over. And I treasure all the times I spent with my friends over the holidays.
New Year’s Eve, Betty Griffith, Landon Dowdy and I spent the evening at the home of Sue Clay in Gravesville playing cards and eating everything we could. Food was every where and good. She had five tables setup and there was card games and dominoes going on all night. We left about 11:15 p.m. and made it home to hear fireworks going off in Guy. What a great way to start the year out with family and friends. Those present were Robbie Ward, Johnny Pooh & Pam Clay and Girls, Sylvia Barton, Martha Clay William and son, daughter Ivy and husband, Sonny May and his family, Ellene niece of Sue, Pam Clay’s parents and her cousin Valerie, J W May and boys, Sherry & Jim Holland and grandkids. I know I probably left someone out, I can’t remember everyone that was there because there were lots of kids running around too.
I spent last Friday going to businesses in Greenbrier Area for the Polar Plunge that will be January 28th at Woolly Hollow. Registration at 11 a.m. Awards and DESSERT Auction to follow along with free chili and then the plunge. The Music Man will be there with his music, Y107, Log Cabin Democrat, 501 Magazine and hopefully one of the T.V. stations, too. We need homemade desserts for the auction if you can’t plunge maybe you can donate a dessert. I would like to invite all law enforcement, fire departments, youth groups from church and schools club scouts, girl scouts businesses to come out and support Area 17 Special Olympics. Proceeds go to enhance the athletic programs for our special Olympians. Let me win! If I cannot win, let me be brave in the attempt! Call 679-3299 or email holtb42@yahoo.com if you want to participate in the plunge or dessert auction or just for more information or even to send news for the column. We’re glad to have new Plungers this year; welcome Grant Cabinet Co, Sonic, Pizza Hut Guy and Greenbrier Fire Department are among a few plus our old faithful’s like Andy Shock, Conway Human Development Center, Ryan Holbrook. So yes we want all politicians to come and join us for the plunge and dessert auction!
History has come and gone and will make new history now in the middle of Guy. The Old Heffington Store has been demolished and they are working on the old Pete Little Store too. It is sad that the buildings are gone but since they were not being used and had run down it sure will make our town look different. Anxious to see what would go in there and build. Out Town Of Guy with the great big heart needs to grow business wise. We have grown in housing and now we need to business wise and everyone support the business that goes in. I will always treasure the memories of those stores and the people that ran them and of course driving by and seeing all the old folks sitting out side watching you run up and down the road. OH MY! I am one of the old folks now! I need some where I can go and hang out!
Please drive safely and don’t drink and drive and send me some news so I can share with everyone Tracy Dowdy celebrated a birthday on New Years Day. Happy Birthday to you. Have a blessed week.

What a beautiful day for the Lord to come again! Each day we have belongs to the Lord even if it’s raining or the sun in shining.
I’m sorry my items didn’t make it to the “Cabin” last week. They must have gotten lost in the mail. And I’m sure I can’t remember what I wrote.
We had all our children, grands and great-grandchildren here at home, for New Year’s Day dinner. I have dinner at noon. We had black eyed peas and hog jowl, ham, Mexican chicken and everything else we could think of. Plus the Papa Ray’s homemade ice cream. The kids expect that.
Over the Christmas holidays, Ms. Lucille Purifoy, at Greenbrier Nursing and Rehab, had friends and relatives visit her. I hope I can remember some of them that I had listed last week. Her daughters, Maureen Fiddler and Kathy Pearce, Charles and Linda Carter, Margie Garrett, Bro. Larry and Carla White with daughters, Haley, Hannah and Hope, Tim Pearce and wife, and Marilyn Colclasure. If I missed someone, sorry, my memory is not too good.
Visiting Rosa Lee and Robert McElroy recently were her granddaughters, Rebekah, Kara and Tara Collins.
Tomorrow, Jan. 8, is the Faulkner County Singing Club. It will be held at Lifesong Baptist Church in Greenbrier. The February singing will be held at Freewill Baptist Church in Conway.
Ms. Bobbye Hendrickson spent the Christmas holidays with her daughter, Sandy and husband, Jim Stephens, and granddaughter, Riley and husband, Nick Tawrone, all of Rusellville.
Marian McGinty, Sunny Sue Earnhart, Dale and Elizabeth and Brandon Johnson visited friends and relatives in Rogers recently.
Sandra and Lewis Jay Cardin and Ms. Betty Applegate enjoyed family over the Christmas holidays. Shawna and boys, Brian and Brad Shannon, Toni and family, Breanne, Katy Beth, Emmily and Avan, and Jason and Trinity Cardin.
Have a good week and try to keep warm.
God uses what ever we give.

The year 2012 has arrived. Have you made your New Year Resolutions? I do not specifically make resolutions because I know that I won’t keep them. I just strive to be a better person for my family, friends and neighbors.
We attended a New Year’s party at the home of Dean and Marlene Patton on New Year’s Eve. We had lots of food and played card games and almost made it to midnight. That’s the way it is when you get old, you start hearing the bed calling a lot earlier than when you were younger.
George and Kristi Roberts hosted a New Year’s Eve party at their home for Chase and Gavin’s friends. I heard that around 70 showed up and had a great time.
Joan McKaskle’s family expanded in 2011. In November her youngest granddaughter, Sarah Brock Herring, and husband, Josh, welcomed a baby boy into this world. His name is Cade Easton. On Dec. 10th her oldest grandson, Brian Robinson, was married to Kelsey McCuan at First Baptist Church in Wooster. They visited Joan during the holidays. Christmas guests of Joan were, Jerry and Debra Robinson; Michael, Lindsey, Kinley and Chanley Meek, and Johnny and Hope Stone, all of Wooster; Kim, Jeff, Carson and Colby McNew of Plummerville; Karen Brock of Vilonia; and Joyce Nell Garrison and Ralph and Janice Mack of Conway.
Bill and I lost a very dear friend and former business partner this past week as the result of Lukemia. He was diagnosed a few weeks ago and started treatments which did not work. Please remember the Roy Monroe family in your prayers. His wife Janis was completely dependant upon him as she has Alzheimer’s.
Centerville

Each first Sunday Centerville United Methodist Church tries to have brunch, and that practice got off to a good start last Sunday. It was the first Sunday of the month, it was the first day of the year, and it was the first time we had brunch in our new addition. With new tables, extra places to sit, and more room in general, the new building holds promise of good things to come.
Tomorrow, Jan. 8, is the date for the Faulkner County Singing Club. It will meet at 1:30 p.m. at Life Song Baptist Church in Greenbrier. The public is always invited to the Club’s events.
We extend sympathy to the families of Mark Worm, Mattie Jo McNew, and Byron McSpadden. These individuals passed away recently. Mark Worm was a brother to Terry Worm of Centerville; Mattie Jo McNew was the wife of John D. McNew who grew up in Centerville; and the Rev. Byron McSpadden was pastor of Centerville Methodist Church in the mid-1940s.
As always, please let me know if you have news for the Centerville section in the newspaper by emailing jennfreeman@windstream.net.
