About two dozen shiny and bright automobiles and motorcycles were on display on the Hendrix Village Green on Saturday afternoon.
The event was sponsored by the Christian Car Club, a group that meets at 6 p.m. on each fourth Monday at The Fish House to talk about ... well... cars, said Larry Jones, a past president.
Jones had two vehicles on display, a 1976 Volkswagen car kit that he built and a 1964 VW Bug that he rebuilt after he found the “derelict” in a barn near Stuttgart.
It took him five years to restore, starting with an acid bath in Mississippi.
“Well, four years, really,” he said. “One of those years I took off because my daughter wanted a wedding. Can you believe that?” he joshed.
Jones and his wife Charlotte have started a related business, finding and framing magazine ads for automobiles from the 1930s to the 1970s. Charlotte answered questions at their booth.
Stopping by Joneses’ two VWs on display, Travis Wright of Conway said he was showing a 1973 VW van — a Transporter — explaining that it is upholstered with “Good Will blankets.”
Wright nodded.
“That’s true to the faith,” Wright said. “And they help deaden the engine noise.”
Both men chuckled knowingly.
In addition to entry fees paid by those displaying their vehicles on Saturday, those attending the show were asked to buy a ticket and vote for their favorite. Trophies were awarded by Michael Biggs, Christian Car Club president.
Proceeds from the show and other events on Saturday on the Green went to a fund to help with medical expenses for Trey Hickey, a St. Joseph student who is in the Children’s Hospital in Dallas after a second diagnosis of leukemia.
The movie “Cars” was shown on the Green Saturday night as the first in the Silver Moon Cinema series. Proceeds from that event also went to the Trey Hickey fund.
