ENGLAND — England’s high school basketball teams swept St. Joseph here Friday night.
The Lions’ senior boys used a 17-6 run in the third quarter to take a 61-55 victory.
St. Joseph (13-6, 3-3) was led by Mark Mallett with 14 points. Grant Smith added 11 and Matt Snider 10. Tyler Jones had six points. Andrew Beck had six and eight assists. Cole Schichtl had four rebounds. Brandon Thessing had five assists and four steals.
The Bulldogs led 35-25 at the half.
“We had a bad start to the second half and that set the tone for the rest of the game,” St. Joseph coach Brent Bruich said. “We battled and played hard but they made the plays down t he stretch. We’ve got to regroup and go back to work on some things and get better for the stretch run.”
In the senior girls game, England (16-4, 7-0) used 12-0 run during the last three minutes of the first half to power to a 64-48 victory over the Lady Bulldogs, who fell to 1-5 in conference play.
Heather Moix scored 30 points and added eight rebounds for St. Joseph. Amy Schichtl had eight points and 10 rebounds. Jennifer Hegman had eight rebounds and two steals. Rebecca Moix had nine assists and three steals.
“We had one little bad stretch before half that hurt us,” Lady Bulldogs coach Chris Kordsmeier said. “We competed well and I was proud of the effort. We just have to cut down on those turnovers.”
St. Joseph teams will play makeup games Monday at Poyen.
JUNIOR HIGH
St. Joseph’s boys (16-1, 4-0) downed England 45-30. Drake Cooper had 12 points and eight rebounds and Taylor Schrekenhofer eight. Cole Schaefers had eight points five rebounds. Dylan Schrenhofer had seven points. Landon Enderlin added seven assists and Nash Nichols had two assists and three steals.
Earlier in the week, St. Joseph’s junior girls (10-2) defeated Episcopal Collegiate, 30-9. Rachel Briggler had six points and three steals. Anna Mayor had five points and four rebounds. Caroline Dail had four points. Meagan Briggler had four points and three assists. Madison Seiter had five rebounds.
The Bulldogs downed Episcopal 35-29. Cooper had 17 points and 10 rebounds. Endlerin had seven points and six assists. Dylan Schrekenhofer had four points and six rebounds.
In seventh-grade girls, St. Joseph won 15-9, led by nine points from Sammi Foster. In seventh-grade boys, Episcopal won 31-16. Landon Bruich had seven points for the Bulldogs and Sam Burgener four.
CCS GIRLS
The Conway Christian senior girls squeezed by Poyen 54-51 Friday night at Eagle Gymnasium.
Christina DenHartog hit three free throws with 2.2 seconds left to seal the win. DenHartog scored eight of her 15 points in the final two minutes.
All seven players scored for the Lady Eagles, led by Kelly Hays’ 17. Sarah Martin added eight, while Alexi Dather finished with six.
Conway Christian will play Abundant Life on Friday.
