HP grant gives CPS laptops, desktops

Posted: January 6, 2011 - 8:52pm

Conway Public Schools was the recent recipient of a technology grant from Hewlett-Packard that totaled more than $210,000.

According to an HP media release, the grant was awarded in the form of 64 laptops and 24 desktop bundles that will equip five computer labs in the district’s elementary and intermediate schools.

The district’s teachers will make use of the laptops for professional development, according to Superintendent Greg Murry.

Murry said the laptops, HP notebook PCs, will be kept in the district’s administrative facilities to be used by teachers and other employees who participate in professional development work days.

The desktop bundles include enough equipment, such as monitors, servers, terminals and other hardware to replace five dated computer labs at three elementary schools and two intermediate schools.

Murry said that the labs will be installed within the next two weeks.

“We applied for the grant and HP was kind enough to let us know that the grants were available. We made the application and we are delighted that HP saw fit to give us part of the proceeds from the grant. They’ve been great to work with,” said Murry.

According to an HP media release, “Teachers will use the notebooks to further their depth of content knowledge and to integrate technology into their curricula. Sample lesson plans will be created by master teachers for replication across all disciplines, grades and schools.”

An HP representative said that a core value of the company is to give back in the form of donations to the communities where its employees live and work.

Hewlett-Packard held its opening dedication in Conway in April of last year. The  $28 million facility acts as a customer and technical support call center.
