The United Way of Central Arkansas will mark the beginning of its Week of Action on Monday with a celebration to be held from 4:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at Simon Park.
The celebration will include musical entertainment by Hands Off, free food and games and activities for children.
“We’ll also have a pretty big surprise for the whole community at 12:30 p.m. Monday at the corner of Oak and Harkrider streets,” said Jennifer Bickers, resource development director for the UWCA. “The focus of this week is going to be on advocacy and volunteering. Week of Action includes a large group of volunteers involved in a series of community-oriented projects. It’s just a chance for members of the community to really get involved in different service projects and give back.”
Temporary headquarters have been established for the event. The office, located at That Bookstore at Mountebanq on Oak Street in downtown Conway, will be open during regular business hours through June 25 and will serve as a source for distribution of materials and information, to register volunteers and as a meeting place for volunteers throughout the week.
“We’re there from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and anyone who wants to volunteer can go there to get more information,” Bickers said.
The UWCA has 14 non-profit entities in Faulkner County that have proposed more than 20 service projects, including one each in Conway and Perry counties.
Bickers said that there are still several opportunities to volunteer. Anyone interested in volunteering should visit headquarters or contact the United Way at 327-5087.
