A bridge over Tucker Creek set in place on Wednesday marks the halfway point for the Tucker Creek Walking/Bike Trail extension project.

The trail currently follows Tucker Creek from a trailhead behind Walmart on Dave Ward Drive to a trailhead on Salem Road a few blocks south of College Avenue. The extension runs along Tucker Creek from Prince Street to Gatlin Park on Tyler Street. The trail is expected to be paved by the end of July, according to city officials.

The trail extension is expected to cost about $400,000 and is being paid for using proceeds from the $1.5 million trails portion Parks Improvement Bond Issue approved by voters in 2007 and a $150,000 alternative transportation grant from the Arkansas State Highway and Transportation Department.

The 12-foot by 70-foot bridge and abutments, built locally by Coreslab International Inc. on Sturgis Road, cost about $85,000.

Further trail construction along Tucker Creek between Prince Street and the Salem Road Trailhead to link the two is planned, and will begin late this year or early next year, depending on when an ongoing Conway Corp. sewer line being installed along the creek is finished.

The bond money used for these trail projects is separate from the general fund, which has been cut this year, and the bond money cannot, by law, be used to augment the general fund or to pay for anything other than parks projects.

which amount is right?

Under the picture the caption states that the bridge cost was 85,000 in the 432,000 trail prodject.

The article states the cost of the trail is between 350,000 to 400,000 and the cost of the locally built bridge was 49,280.

Bridge

I would wager that the cost of the bridge itself was $49,280, but when you add in the labor and crane to place the bridge, that is where the $85,000 comes in.

You add in the cost of the abutments to the cost of the bridge. The abutments were about $28k, I've been told, and chalk the rest up to labor/equipment time and transporting the thing.

And an early draft of the story said $350k to $400k. That was an estimate from early in the project. As things have added up, a more reasonable estimate came to be about $400,000.

Connection

Is there a map showing how these will be connected? Seems like there are businesses and homes in between the two trails. Just curious.
