Faulkner County firefighters responded to a “fully engulfed” house fire on Shaw Bridge Road in Wooster on Friday night.
“The roof was falling in on the house when we got here,” Wooster Volunteer Fire Department Capt. Wayne Hartness said. “It was coming out of every window and the doors.”
Hartness said the fire, which was reported at 7:15 p.m., had completely destroyed the vacant house at 235 Shaw Bridge Road by the time the first firefighters arrived at 7:30 p.m.
Hartness said the house had been vacant since November. He said the house’s electricity also had been shut off when the former resident moved nearly two months ago.
Firefighters relied on water brought to the scene because an available hydrant was “too far away,” Hartness said, but that wasn’t a problem because the house was destroyed before firefighters arrived.
Investigators were still looking into the cause of the fire at press time. The Wooster, Greenbrier and Beaverfork fire departments responded to the scene.
Hartness said it was too early for investigators to determine if arson was suspected.
