Political pundit Dick Morris rallied people around the concept of keeping the government’s “Hands Off My Health Care” during a Thursday afternoon event at Simon Park in Conway.
Morris spoke about the problems he found with the proposed health care plan currently being discussed in Washington and encouraged those present to call on their senators to oppose the plan in the Senate.
James Martin, president of The 60 Plus Association and Teresa Crossland-Oelke, state director of Americans for Prosperity, also left the bus bearing the message of “Hands Off My Health Care,” the crowd cheered and waved signs bearing messages such as “Vote No on Health Care,” “Obama’s ATM (American Taxpayer Money),” “Party Like Its 1773,” and a yellow flag saying “Don’t Tread on Me.”
Mentions of Congressmen Vic Snyder and Marion Berry drew boos from the crowd. The two men recently voted for the House’s version of the health care plan.
Shawn Danko, a Canadian national who operates a restaurant in Memphis and who is seeking American citizenship, offered to the crowd a glimpse at the health care system in Canada. He said the Canadians pay dearly for their health care system, paying 28.5 percent for the first $38,000 they make. Additionally, Canadians pay for supplemental insurance.
As a small business owner in Memphis, Danko said the changes to the health care system would cost him $48,000 for this 55 employees. He said that to come up with that money, he would have to cut staff, cut benefits or raise his prices.
Morris told the audience that this was not his first trip to Arkansas, alluding to his days of working with former President Bill Clinton and his wife Hillary.
“The whole health care debate is vital to our future,” Morris said. “It is not an effort to redistribute wealth. It is an effort to redistribute health.”
He said many people have asked how he could work for the Clintons and support the Clinton health care plan while not supporting the Obama plan. Morris said the Clinton plan made no cuts to Medicare.
“Obama’s is full of cuts,” Morris said. “It is so easy to do it. It is a slippery slope.”
Morris said the core value of the pro-life movement is to protect human life. He said that while people may disagree on whether life starts at conception or birth, “I don’t know anyone who thinks life ends before death.”
He said the Obama plan cuts reimbursements to doctors and penalizes the top 10 percent of doctors who spend too much on patients by further cutting their reimbursements.
He said each year, a new 10 percent would emerge, “dumbing down medical care.”
He said the plan offers “artificial scarcity” through QARYs or quality adjusted remaining years. The QARYs would be determined by lifestyle, work, income generated, memory and other factors.
Additionally, Morris said if a person does not buy insurance, he or she will have to pay a fine equal to 2-1/2 percent of their income. If a person does not buy insurance or pay the fine, the person will be put in prison. Health insurance premiums for other Americans will be taxed up to 40 percent. Medical devices such as pacemakers and electric wheelchairs will also be taxed.
Morris said the bill can still be defeated. Morris said the bill that has passed the House cannot pass the Senate and that a bill the Senate presents cannot pass the House.
“It will be a long, hard, tough battle. While that happens we are going to be pounding,” Morris said.

incomplete coverage and analysis
DICK Morris' comment that the movement for health care reform is a "redistribution of health" is totally correct, but not in the way he meant. it is an effort to get it to those who do not have it. what a horrible notion. the apparent double standard by these supposed pro-life people should be obvious to even a child.
the real issue though is the outright lies perpetuated by these people. these are the "death panel" people for those who don't know. their new lie? the health care reform movement is "essentially an effort to repeal Medicare." these are the words of DICK Morris. it is a lie pure and simple. also, let us not forget the source of these American's for Prosperity. they are a CORPORATE ASTROTURF "movement" associated with another DICK. DICK Armey, a DC Lobbyist who represents the health care industry. their leader Tim Phillips is a known long time advocate of corporate interests. why would these people spend a $1M a day to fight reform unless it was going to cost them money? it does not take much deduction to realize that means regular folk will not be getting raped to the degree they are presently!
final thought; if you are happy with your health insurance you are not using it!

where is the mention of attending counter protesters?
Angry
Obviously this is one of those topics that creates some heated debate. Just look at the preceeding two posts to confirm that. I think we can all agree that no system is perfect. Our current system of health care in this country is based on our free-market capitalist system; it works but it isn't perfect and could be better.
I agree that we do need health care reform, but what Congress is trying to put together now is to much. Our economy is at a very weak point, our national debt is skyrocketing, and our banking system still has a way to go before being fully healthy. Before we embark on new programs that will add billions, if not trillions, to our national debt, let's fix our existing issues first.
I personally like less federal involvement, but I'm willing to consent to the fact that government does need to step in an put better controls in place to regulate the medical insurance industry.
Seniors and Fox News
First - Dick Morris is an independent political commentator who happens to appear as a guest on Fox News on occasion. If you watched Fox News, you would know that, and many other things you won't be told by the other media. An informed person will watch Fox News, MSNBC, and even CBS to get all the angles of a story. You might be surprised which of those networks is most fair.
Second - Seniors lived most of their lives in an America where individual independence and freedom were cherished, and paid for with the lives of veterans. They love, appreciate and respect the constitution. This is in stark contrast with the Socialistic and big government nanny-state we live with now with the rise of the Liberal party. Personally, I will line up in the seniors' corner.
Third - I did not like many of the policies of George W Bush either... but I always knew he did what he thought best to keep Americans safe, using information we are not able to receive. As far as I am concerned, B. Obama is a traitor to American values, to American fairness, to the American military and to each American individually. Here's hoping the Republicans can now find a decent candidate in 2010.
Can we please stop using
Can we please stop using names like "BOZO" and "traitor" to describe our Presidents and stop the personal attacks against even local people whose political perspective differs from our own? That's the whole reason this health care debate is not a debate about issues but one about people and parties. We can't have a sensible discussion about the issues with health care because people are too pissed off to talk rationally to one another. C'mon let's grow up out of Junior High and act like grown people. Good grief....
BTW, thanks to msmith254 for talking about issues instead of attacking people.

Practice What You Preach
Hey Dick Morris:
My home phone is on the government's National Do Not Call Registry, so why don't you keep your hands off of the phone and stop bothering me and others like me with your pointless phone calls in the evening. I don't care what your opinion is, and I certainly don't care to hear it from you. Besides...your message is pointless and you ramble.
None are so blind as those that will not see. We must always remember the Lu'ser.
What if?
There is a need for reform. Pre-existing conditions coverage denial, higher premiums on women, and frivolous claim denial needs to end. Insurance companies have enough revenue to spend over $263 millions fighting the legislation, then they should have enough money to pay the claims. Just think of how many medical claims could have been paid for with that kind of money. Anyone who has ever had a claim denied over silliness, knows there need to be reform. I'm tired of all politicians from Nancy Pelosi, Harry Reid, Michael Steele, Sarah Palin and all. I'm tired of the political party bickering and fighting. Partisan politics is ruining this country. There's just too much money involved. Too many our elected official are being swayed by their campaign contributions. Our politicians may not be receiving an envelope of money as a bribe for votes, but millions in campaign contributions has the same effect.
I just want the facts about news as it happens. I can do without the opinions.
Greg
I don't use the "traitor" term lightly. How else do you describe one whose basic personal philosophy is to destroy the longstanding American values associated with capitalism and individual rights? Read carefully... I did not call Mr. Obama a name... only using an adjective to describe him accurately.
Grammar Lesson
Arkansasobserver, you said, to quote you exactly, "Read carefully... I did not call Mr. Obama a name... only using an adjective to describe him accurately." Your original statement was, "B. Obama is a traitor." The sentence construction there is Subject Noun, linking verb, article, predicate noun. The function of a predicate noun is to rename the subject it follows. Therefore, you did call Mr. Obama a name, the name of traitor. The phrases "to American values, to American fairness, to the American military and to each American individually" are prepositional phrases used as adjectives, but they modify the predicate noun they follow, not the subject of the sentence.

I do watch Faux News
I do watch Faux News for exactly the reason described above by Arkansasobserver. Faux News is infamous for subverting the truth, showing the wrong videos of events like this one, and inciting people to angst with false information. Dick Morris is more than "an independent political commentator who happens to appear as a guest on Fox News on occasion." He is a REGULAR on "Faux News", a PAID political commentator "guest" who has been on a witch hunt to destroy the democrats since the Clinton Administration fired him for improper conduct with "escorts". I wonder who paid the costs of bringing such an outstanding individual to the likes of our fair town? Could it be the Health Insurance lobby?
As for the quote from the Canadian, before you start believing strangers brought in on buses, research the information for yourselves. Here is an article from consumeraffairs.com in 2003 describing some of the differences in the costs of U.S. / Canadian health care.

Was Dick Morris offering candy to anyone? I think so and I wouldn't take any if I were you.
Why Can't We All Just Get Along?
Two physicians boarded a flight out of Seattle. One sat in the window seat, the other sat in the middle seat. Just before takeoff, an attorney got on and took the aisle seat next to the two physicians.
The attorney kicked off his shoes, wiggled his toes and was settling in when the physician in the window seat said," I think I'll get up and get a coke."
"No problem," said the attorney, "I'll get it for you."
While he was gone, one of the physicians picked up the attorney's shoe and spat in it.
When he returned with the coke, the other physician said, "That looks good, I think I'll have one too."
Again, the attorney obligingly went to fetch it and while he was gone, the other physician picked up the other shoe and spat in it. The attorney returned and they all sat back and enjoyed the flight. As the plane was landing, the attorney slipped his feet into his shoes and knew immediately what had happened.
"How long must this go on?" he asked. "This fighting between our professions? This hatred? This animosity? This spitting in shoes and peeing in cokes?"
"Seniors lived most of their lives in an America where individual independence and freedom were cherished, and paid for with the lives of veterans. They love, appreciate and respect the constitution. This is in stark contrast with the Socialistic and big government nanny-state we live with now with the rise of the Liberal party."
HOGWASH!
You should thank God! for (your dirty word) Liberals...
"Before one can say why one is a liberal, one can hardly avoid trying to say what a liberal is. In the semantic warfare of our age, world like "liberalism" and "conservatism" have come almost to acknowledge fashions rather than to express meanings. Thus a few years back even some conservatives began to call themselves liberals - now even some liberals are beginning to call themselves conservatives.
But, if one cannot at first say what the difference between liberalism and conservatism is, one can at least say what it isn't. Many of the current attempts at the identification of species, I regret to say, seem to me misleading or erroneous.
Thus we are told that the difference between liberal and conservative is that the liberal believes in the perfectibility of man while the conservative has a conviction of human limitation and original sin. Yet no one has preached to this generation more effectively of the reality of human imperfection than the liberal (in politics, at least.) Reinhold Niebuhr, while it was Andrew Carnegie, a conservative, who used to say of man that there was no "conceivable end to his march to perfection." And it would be hard to argue for example that the words of Dwight D. Eisenhower, the conservative, show a greater sense of the frailty of human striving or the tragedy of the human condition than those of the liberal Adlai E. Stevenson.
Similarly, it is difficult to believe that the attitude toward the role of the state. Thus the conservatives Alexander Hamilton and John Quincy Adams and the liberal Franklin D. Roosevelt agreed in advocating government direction of the economy, while the liberal Thomas Jefferson and the conservative Herbert Hoover agreed in wishing to limit the power of the state.
Nor does the distinction lie in the question of civil freedom. Some liberals have been 'majoritarians' with a limited concern for the rights of minorities; some conservatives have been valiant defenders of the liberties of conscience and expression. Nor does it even really lie in the question of private property. While conservatives have been the more vigilant champions of corporate property, liberals have perhaps stood more consistently for the rights of property in John Locke's original sense of a product of nature with which man mixes his labor."
Conservative vs. Liberal
March 4, 1956
Just wondering...
Has anyone here actually read the nearly 2000 page document?
Are we all so motivated by politicians that we are content with remaining ignorant and just follow along because they say we should or should not? Because surely they know what is best for us because they are either Democrats or Republicans, right? We voted them into office so they are our voice, so we should just trust them. I watch several news outlets and they are all skewed in one direction or the other. There is NOT a news outlet that will split the lines and stand in the middle for Americans.
I've been reading it a little here and there for a while now. I still can't say I'm for or against it. I can say that for the most part you can read two pages and each part refers to another part and says absolutely nothing in the process. No wonder the blasted thing is so big.
Medicare, Medicaid and VA Insurance are restrictive.. just like private insurance. Are these not insurance provided by our government? Do you know how much is just written off to Doctors because Medicare doesn't pay for the procedure? I think too many people believe this is the band aid that will fix everything. It is equally difficult to have a government insurance claim filed and paid as it is a private insurance and sometimes more so.
I'm not saying nothing should be done, but I do not think, as of yet, that this is the answer either. We, as a society, are so hell bent on more more, now now that we need to stop, take a deep breath and reanalyze.
I agree with krysd26 -
I agree with krysd26 - especially the last statement. No, I haven't read the bill. I don't have time to wade through 2000 pages and connect all the dots. One of my main thoughts on the bill is that it should be pared down and run piecemeal. Let's pass a piece of it at a time so we can understand what we are doing.
Greg
"I don't use the "traitor"
"I don't use the "traitor" term lightly."
Nor do you use it correctly. The US has very narrow definition of the term traitor that is limited to an act of war against the United States.
Calling the President a socialist borders on the ridiculous, but sadly, I think some people actually believe it!. A socialist government does not give money to banks. It takes over the banks. It does not bail out failing automotive industries, it nationalizes them. The US government now, and for the past fifty years, is very far right of anything that could ever be interpreted as socialist or communist. You could very easily argue the opposite, and make a case that the govenment is and has been gradually been edging to facisim. Bush certainly eroded the constitution (see Patriot Act, State Sponsored Torture, pre-emptive and wars of aggression, domestic spying, elimination of habeus corpus, etc) ,and with events such as the recent Supreme court decision allowing unlimited corporate funding (I,E ,buying of politicians),and the bailout of large banks and corporations with taxpayer money, we are much further to the right than we'll ever be to the left.
As far as health care, anything short of government run health care is simply going to end up being a give away to insurance and pharmaceutical companies.
