LITTLE ROCK — Conway freshman Summar Roachell posted a score in the clubhouse Wednesday, then watched and waited an hour for several close but futile attempts to match it, securing the state Overall girls golf title at Pleasant Valley Country Club.
Roachell's 7-over 79 was her worst round of the season but all golfers struggled as they shook off the rust from the tournament being postponed for three weeks and practice time limited because of heavy rains.
Roachell prevailed by one stroke over Emily Pyler of Centerpoint and Madison Talley of Clarksville. Talley won a playoff for second place. Micah Radler of Fayetteville posted an 81. Grier Bennett of Jessieville led Roachell going into the 17th hole then hit her ball in the water, then took a 10 on a Murphy's Law experience on the par-5 18th hole.
"It was my goal from the beginning of the season to win this," said Roachell, who went off with the first flight of girls representing top finishers from all classifications. "I didn't play my best but I won so it feels good to reach my goal."
Brooke Enderlin of St. Joseph, who played in a basketball game the night before, fired an 85.
