Poker players will be playing to make Christmas brighter for teenagers in Central Arkansas during the Make A Child Smile Texas Hold ‘Em Tournament on Saturday.
Jessica Fallen of Make A Child Smile said the proceeds will benefit the Christmas project, providing coats, clothing, hygiene products and gifts for teenagers.
Although the coats are a part of the Christmas project, Fallen said when coats are donated, she distributes them.
“Today, I delivered 35 coats,” she said, adding she has already delivered about 65 of the 228 coats requested by children for the winter season. “I am taking the donations of the coats, and as soon as I get one that is the right size and right gender, I deliver it.”
Fallen said if people want to make donations but not participate in the tournament, donations of hygiene products are needed such as deodorant and shampoo.
Fallen said 25 people have pre-registered for the tournament. By pre-registering, players receive a $20 credit for re-buys or add-ons. Re-buys and add-ons are $50.
The registration fee of $75 gives players admission, chili created by the chef at Michaelango’s and Mike’ Place and beverages. Players must be 21 years or older. Registration begins at 5:30 p.m. with the first deal starting at 6:30.
Prizes will be awarded to the top eight participants. The top four will receive Visa gift cards. The top prize is $500. Players placing fifth through eighth will receive poker chip sets.
“A lot of the players are regulars and have played the last three or four years,” she said, noting that the tournament offers a good mix of players of different backgrounds and skill levels. “It is professionally run. It will be a good practice game for people who like to play in Tunica.”
The tournament is set up in tables of eight with 20 minute blinds. Usually the tournament draws more than 60 players.
“Some play in tournaments. Some play in their garage,” she said.
Those who want to watch and have chili can do so for $15.
“They know it is for a charity and that is what makes it fun,” Fallen said. “When you play, you help a kid in the county. How can you lose?”
