UCA recognizes student for crime tip that led to arrest

The University of Central Arkansas recognized a student this afternoon whose crime tip led to the arrest of two young men suspected to have stolen items from at least a dozen vehicles, mostly on the UCA campus.

On Oct. 13, student David White called the university’s police department to report seeing a man later identified as 18-year-old Aaron L. White of Norphlet, Ark., pulling on the door handles of vehicles in an apparent attempt to find an unlocked car. Two minutes later, according to UCA Chief of Police Larry James, Aaron White, who is not related to David White, was stopped by a UCAPD officer and admitted his involvement in theft on the campus and the involvement of his alleged accomplice, 19-year-old George S. Azo of El Dorado. Both were arrested. Aaron White is charged with breaking or entering, theft of property and fraudulent use of a credit card. Azo is charged with burglary and theft of property.

About $2,140 worth of stolen property was recovered and returned to its rightful owners, James said.

Offensive line strengthening Greenbrier football team

The Greenbrier football team has enjoyed a great deal of success this season.

The resurgent Panthers have been in the cellar of the 5A-West Conference in recent years but are playoff-bound in 2009. Much of that has to do with the offensive line.

The group has allowed Greenbrier to have a 2,000-yard passes (Neal Burcham) and an 1,000-yard rusher (Hunter Winston).

The Panthers will need another good performance from that group this week, as they’ll take on rival Vilonia in the annual Faulkner County Judge’s Cup.

The St. Joseph volleyball team won all of its 23 first matches.

That win streak wasn’t snapped until the Lady Bulldogs fell to Mansifield in four games in the Class 3A state championship. Three members of the St. Joseph team (Courtney Briggler, Veronica Bausom and Katie Halter) were selected to the all-state tournament team.

This season marked the first time the Lady Bulldogs had reach the state finals.
