M.H. Randle Jr. defeated H.O. Weatherly, two and one, and Johnnie Whitten defeated Lowell C. Thompson, two and one, in semi-final matches of the annual city tournament yesterday at the Conway Country Club. Randle, defending champion, and Whitten, former champion, will meet Sunday for the 1939 title.

50 years ago

(1964)

James O. Hill, Faulkner County agent, is in Fayetteville for a Farm Bureau conference. He will return Wednesday. Assistant agent Jim Moffet began a three-week session at the University of Arkansas this week to complete work on his master’s degree.

25 years ago

(1989)

Justin Lee of Vilonia, along with teammate Clay Rhoden of Sheridan, Ark., finished third in team roping at the Nationals High School Rodeo in Pueblo, Colo., held July 24-30.

The duo competed against 148 teams from 35 states and the Canadian provinces of Alberta and British Columbia. They were the only competitors from Arkansas to place in the top four.

Cecil Ward of Conway came five inches away from winning $1 million. Ward was one of 10 people who had the chance to sink a hole-in-one during the Family Service Agency Million Dollar Shootout. Using a nine iron, Ward nearly sunk the 160-yard shot.
