UCA’s Woodard on Buchanan watch list
University of Central Arkansas’ Jonathan Woodard has been named to the 2014 Buck Buchanan Award watch list by The Sports Network.
Woodard, a 6-foot-6, 271-pound junior defensive end, was one of 20 players named to the list, which recognizes the top Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) defensive player in the nation.
Hendrix’s Blatt gets soccer honor
Hendrix College freshman Jason Blatt has been named to the Jewish Sports Review Men’s Lacrosse All-America First Team.
Blatt, a faceoff specialist and midfielder from Denver, Colo., ranked ninth in the nation and first in the Southern Athletic Association with a school record 9.47 ground balls per game and 161 ground balls. He also ranked 11th in the NCAA and led the league with a .667 faceoff percentage (234-of-351). Blatt scored seven goals and recorded two assists and was an All-SAA Honorable Mention.
Hendrix adds 8 for men’s lacrosse
The Hendrix College men’s lacrosse team will add eight freshman for the 2014-15 academic year.
“They are the top players on their teams, top scholars in their high school, and also possess leadership potential,” said Hendrix coach Curt Foxx, who is beginning his fifth season.
The new members are:
Garrett Brown, midfielder, Lexington, Mass.: As a senior, he scored 19 goals with 11 assists and had three goals and five assists during his junior season.
Tucker Holihan, midfielder, Johns Creek, Ga.: He served his team as a captain for three seasons and traveled with LB3’s Elite Travel Team all four years in high school.
Brian Jasper, Attacker, Carmel, Calif.: He has been a four-year starter at attack for Carmel High School. He has served as team captain for three seasons, and was selected as offensive player of the year in his conference, along with helping his team garner its league championship title twice.
Bobby Louree, attacker/midfielder, Rogers: He has played attack for the Northwest Arkansas Bulls for the past four seasons. He doubled as a tight end on the Rogers High School football team, where he was State Farm Team MVP, Hammer Award for the hardest hitter and most physical team member.
Jon McKenna, midfielder Lake Brantley, Fla.: McKenna, a midfielder from Lake Brantley High School, garnered the Coaches’ Award in 2013.
Reed Mershon, defenseman, Austin, Texas: A two time all-district Defenseman and all-state player as a senior Mershon also garnered Academic all-district awards each of his four years at Austin High School.
Thomas Adamo, defenseman, Katonah, N.Y.: He was selected as the captain of his lacrosse team at Brunswick and was a member of the 2013 Houstaonic League Championship Football Team. Adamo was named Best Senior Lineman for the football team.
Reed Spivey, attacker/midfielder, Murfreesboro, Tenn.: He scored 61 career goals as an attacker for the Webb School and helped them to a state title as a sophomore.
Laird added to Hendrix staff
Former Millsaps College standout Kasey Laird will join the Hendrix College volleyball and track and field staffs as an assistant coach in 2014.
Laird spent the 2013-14 school year as an assistant volleyball coach and interim head women’s lacrosse coach at Millsaps in Jackson, Miss.
Laird was a volleyball and track and field star for the Majors. As a middle blocker, she was the 2012 Southern Athletic Association Player of the Year and was All-SAA First Team during her senior year. Laird was also a two-time All-Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Third Team selection. She finished her career with a school record 1,316 kills and 1,541 digs, the fifth most in school history.
She was a three-time conference champion in the discus and the 2013 SAA champion in the shot put. Laird was named to the SCAC All-Sportsmanship team in track and field in 2009.
