W.A. Walker of Harrison has begun construction of a tourist camp on lots at the corner of Sixth and Chestnut streets, across from the home of the Catholic sisters. R.H. Adams has the contract for the cabins.

(1964)

Two promotions and one addition to the Conway Fire Department were announced today by Chief Wilson Drews.

Lewis Winter was promoted from second assistant chief to first assistant. Oscar Florence, a driver, was promoted to second assistant chief.

The new member of the department is Doyce C. Ballard.

25 years ago

(1989)

Jennifer Ellison, 6, daughter of Lonnie and Elmarie Ellison of Conway, is the 1989 Poster Child for the Arkansas Speech-Language-Hearing Association. Posters with her picture proclaiming May as “Better Hearing and Speech Month” were distributed and displayed throughout the state.

Jennifer and her parents were recognized by Gov. Bill Clinton on May 4, when he officially declared May as Better Hearing and Speech Month.

The Greenbrier Braves have compiled a 17-0 record during the tee ball season winning both the preseason and postseason tournaments. Team members are Luke Turner, Wesley Waters, Wyatt Brewer, Steven Brewster, Carter Coats, Carter Burcham, Coltin Patton, Sam Burroughs, Cody McKnight, and Shane Almond. Coaches are Todd Patton, Kirby Coats, and Jack McKnight.

Mark Moyer, a redshirt freshman from Russellville who missed the 2016 season with an arm injury, went the distance, allowing just five hits and striking out four to record UCA’s first complete game of the season to lead the University of Central Arkansas to a run-rule, 10-0 victory New Orleans University in the runner game of the three-game series Sunday at Bear Stadium.
