See who from Conway leads in Big Bass Bonanza

LITTLE ROCK — Steve Scherrey of Conway is the leader after the end of the second day Saturday of fishing in the Arkansas Big Bass Bonanza with the 6.98 pound bass he caught in the Dumas pool.

Scherrey was the Big Bass Bonanza overall winner in 2000.

“I’ve fished every year since 2000, and I haven’t won any money since then,” he said. “I fish with my buddy, and we’ve weighed in fish, but they’ve gotten bounced out by bigger fish. Today, we just decided to fish like we do in Conway. We threw some worms and found some lily pads. We saw a big fish in the area earlier. About the fifth cast I caught it.

If we win, we win. If not, it’s still exciting. This tournament is so good for the average angler.”

If his fish remains the biggest catch of the three-day tournament, Scherrey will take home the guaranteed $50,000 grand prize.

Anglers still have from 6 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sunday to try and snag a larger bass.

Leaders in the other four pools are:

William Fitzgerald, Greenbrier (6.87) — Dardanelle pool

David May, Little Rock (6.85) — North Little Rock pool

Karry Dedmon, Huntington (5.69) — Fort Smith pool

Jason Hamilton, Star City (5.63) — Pine Bluff pool

Each of those leaders has the potential to win a guaranteed $10,000 for catching the largest bass in each of these pools during the tournament.

The tournament spans more than 300 miles of eligible fishing waters on the river inside the state’s borders.
