75 years ago

(1939)

A private professional library of 600 volumes has been donated to the library of Arkansas State Teachers College by Dr. J.J. Doyne, who was the first president of the institution. This library is composed of many rare volumes and many up-to-date volumes on educational philosophy the he accumulated during his 50 years of teaching.

Coming to the college in 1907, Dr. Doyne served in the capacity of president until he resigned in 1917.

50 years ago

(1964)

An area in the western section of Conway was without power for a period of more than two hours last night after an automobile ran into a power pole along Donaghey Avenue.

The outage was along Donaghey Avenue between College Avenue and Prince Street and on Robinson Avenue west of Donaghey.

James H. Brewer, assistant superintendent of the Conway Corp., said the damage was repaired during the night.

The driver of the car escaped injury. Three other youths rode with the driver.

(1989)

Kristin Burney, 16, recently toured as a soloist with “I Witness,” a high school choral tour group sponsored by Mid-South Christian College in Memphis.

The group performed in churches in Mississippi, Tennessee and Arkansas and at a youth camp in Alabama.

Miss Burney is a daughter of Bill and Judie Burney of Conway and a granddaughter of Finis W. Shepherd and the late Jewell Shepherd and the late Woody and Antha Burney, all of Conway. She is a step-granddaughter of Jeanene Shepherd of Conway.

She is a member of University Church of Christ and will be a junior in the fall at Central Arkansas Christian Schools in North Little Rock, where she is a member of the A Capella Chorus and the select pop music group, Southern Magic.

There were 41 St. Joseph Elementary School students who made all A’s for the second-semester grading period.
