More than 400 Conway school children enjoyed swimming in Kuykendall’s pool yesterday afternoon. The boys and girls were pupils in the rooms of David Doyle, F.H. Dunn, Miss Helen Blanch Westmoreland, Miss Ivah Kuykendall, Mrs. L.C. Florence and Mrs. Nonye B. Haynes. This afternoon the faculties of the public schools held their annual picnic at Kuykendall’s.

50 years ago

(1964)

Cadet Luke Gordy of Conway is a member of a company honor guard for President Johnson in ceremonies today at Lexington, Va.

The occasion is the dedication of the George C. Marshall Memorial Library.

Gordy, son of Dr. and Mrs. Fred Gordy Jr., is a freshman at Virginia Military Institute at Lexington. Marshall once was a cadet and later served as commandant at VMI.

(1989)

Dana Atkinson, 17, daughter of Guy and Brenda Atkinson of Mount Vernon, was crowned the 1989 Teen Miss Beauty Queen in a spring pageant held recently in Enola.

Miss Atkinson is a granddaughter of Marguerite Ruple of Vilonia and the late Alton Ruple and Mr. and Mrs. Goley Atkinson of Vilonia.

The Conway Morning Optimist Club recently conducted its annual fishing derby at Bob Courtway Spirit Lake for children ages 13 and younger.

About 100 children participated, an almost 340 pounds of fish were caught.

Winners of the big fish contest were Jay Badji, 4; Caleb Humphrey, 8; Adam Freyaldenhoven, 9; and Cotton Phillips, 11. Winners of the total weight contest were Bailey Bowman, 6; Ethan H. Bnek, 7; Bailey Smithson, 9; and Ethan King, 12.
