Angles opens in 40th plac

COLUMBIA, Mo. — University of Central junior Pep Angles opened play in the NCAA Columbia Regional with a 3-over 75 on Thursday at the Club at Old Hawthorne.


Angles, playing in his second consecutive NCAA Regional, opened with birdies in two of his first four holes and made the turn at 1-under before going four over on the second nine to finish at 3-over and in a six-way tie for 40th place in a field of 75 golfers.

Angles, from Barcelona, Spain, is a two-time Southland Conference Golfer of the Year and was also the SLC Golf Student-Athlete of the Year last year.

Oklahoma State stormed out to a nine-stroke lead, shooting a 16-under 272 to lead the team standings after Day 1. The Cowboys had the top two scores of the day with Jordan Niebrugge at 65 and Talor Gooch at 67.

Round 2 is set for Friday morning.

UCA tracksters earn All-SLC honors

UCA had 12 athletes earn All-Southland Conference track and field honors on Thursday. The awards are earned by finishing in the top three at the SLC Outdoor Championship, which was held last weekend at UCA’s Bill Stephens Track Complex. UCA had two first-team honorees, two second-team selections and eight third-team student-athletes.

Senior Erika Setzler of Conway earned first-team honors for repeating as the 3,000 meter steeplechase champion in a time of 10:20.56. She also earned third-team honors with a third-place finish in the 5,000 meters in a time of 18:03.00.

Sophomore Brooke Cassar was also a multi All-SLC selection after defending her title in the 10,000 meters (37:06.15) and finishing second in the 5,000 meters (17:43.22).

Senior Tanesha Maxwell earned third-team honors with a third-place finish in the 100 meters (11.66). Senior Jordan Chadwick was a third-team selection, finishing third in the 800 meters (2:13.11), while freshman Marine Lecart was also a third-teamer with a third-place finish in the 1,500 meters (4:32.73).

Sophomore Corentin Louis finished second in the 1,500 meters in a time of 3:53.57 and earned second-team honors. The 4x400 relay team of Trevon Boyd, Kelton Ray, Dustie Smith and Chance Tanner earned third-team honors in a time of 3:12.03.

Hendrix baseball camps

A baseball camp for youngsters, ages 6-12, will be at Hendrix College, Monday, June 16, though Thursday, June 19.

It will be from 9 a.m. until noon daily. Cost is $99 with a $20 discount given each additional sibling. Instruction will be by the Hendrix baseball staff and players.
