75 years ago

(1939)

A class of 37 — 19 girls and 18 boys — will be graduated from Greenbrier High School at commencement exercises here Thursday night at 8 o’clock. Dr. Fred Keller of Conway will deliver the commencement address.

The Rev. Fred I Cairns Jr., pastor of the First Presbyterian Church of Conway, delivered the baccalaureate sermon to the class at the high school auditorium last Sunday night.

50 years ago

(1964)

Dr. Hadley Yates, associate professor of music at Hendrix College, will leave Monday for Fort Worth, Texas, to serve as judge for the Piano Teachers Guild.

Dr. Yates will audition students in Fort Worth for three days and in Grand Prairie, Texas, for five days.

Most of the participants are of elementary, junior high or senior high school age.

(1989)

Michele Mills, a senior at Guy-Perkins High School, has been awarded a scholarship to study in West Germany beginning in July of the 1989-90 school year.

Miss Mills, the daughter of Patricia Johnston, is one of 20 students chosen for this honor in four states, including Arkansas. This is the second year that students from Arkansas have been involved in the three-year-old Congress/Bundestag Vocational Youth Exchange Program.

Lorrie Payne-Smith of Conway has joined Stocks Mortgage Inc. as vice president of operations. Smith is a graduate of the University of Central Arkansas and is currently working on a master’s degree at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock. She is a board member of the Faulkner County March of Dimes Community Council and recruiting chair for the Youth Leadership Institute.
