UCA’s Brown Golfer of the Year

University of Central Arkansas sophomore Sarah Brown was named the 2013-14 Southland Conference Women’s Golfer of the Year after a vote by the league’s head coaches and sports information directors.

Brown was medalist at last week’s 2014 SLC Championship at High Meadow Ranch Golf Club in Magnolia, Texas. The sophomore from Mount Pleasant, who trailed by five shots entering the final round, fired the lowest round of the tournament with a 3-under par 69 to claim medalist honors. For the tournament, Brown shot a 3-over 219 to win by a stroke.

Brown is the fourth UCA golfer to be named golfer of the year since joining the league in 2006-07, joining Julia Roth (2013), Rebecca Sorensen (2010) and Nichole Forshner (2008, 2009). Brown is making her first all-conference team after earning honorable mention as a freshman.

Brown averaged a score of 75.03 in 27 rounds of play this season with a low round of 68 and a low tournament of 216. In 10 tournaments, Brown finished in the top five six times, including two runner-up finishes and the victory at the SLC Championship.

Kids’ Triathlon moves to Hendrix

The Conway Kids’ Triathlon in August is returning to its roots.

Registration has opened for the 17th annual First Security Conway Kids’ Triathlon on Aug. 2.

The event will be held at Hendrix College this year after several years at the University of Central Arkansas.

Youth, ages 6-15, can register online at www.conwaykidstri.com until Aug. 1, as long as spots are still available.

“We are so excited about our new location for the triathlon this year at Hendrix College,” said Shannon Milam, race director.

“Hendrix is actually where the triathlon started out, so it’s like going home for us. When we first had the event at Hendrix, the triathlon included 75 participants, and last year we had 360. The event has continued to grow over our 16 years, and we only expect it to grow in the many years ahead.”

“Hendrix College is excited to host the Conway Kids’ Triathlon this year. We are looking forward to this top-notch event that draws athletes from Arkansas, Missouri, Oklahoma, Louisiana and Tennessee. They will definitely enjoy the venue, atmosphere and overall experience,” said Karl Lenser, Hendrix College Director of Wellness Programs and Facilities.

The Conway Kids’ Triathlon is an event for all abilities. Ages 6-10 complete a 50-yard swim, 2-mile bike and ½ mile run.

Ages 11-15 complete a 100-yard swim, four-mile bike and mile run.
