The Hendrix College concert band, directed by Milton Lippman, left today on its annual spring tour. It will appear tonight at Helena, tomorrow at Forrest City, Wednesday at Blytheville, and Thursday at Searcy.

Conway members of the band include Judy Wilkins, Berman Maxey, Wiley Gregory, Anna Louise Sims, Marietta Wofford, Victor Hill, Bud Farris, Dale Ford, Byron McKinney, Hilka Green, Erma Alice Hill and Blake Browning.

50 years ago

(1964)

Gov. Orval E. Faubus yesterday appointed J.F. O’Kelley, Conway concrete manufacturer and contractor, to a six-year term on the Arkansas Planning Commission.

O’Kelley is a past president of the Conway Chamber of Commerce.

25 years ago

(1989)

Saturday will be the last day of Simon’s grocery store’s 52-year history.

The store at 814 Front St. will close about 6:15 p.m. Saturday, George Simon, co-owner with his brother, Fritz Simon, said today. As it has since he January announcement that it would be closing, the store will continue to stock fresh dairy products, meat and produce items.

Simon said most items were marked at a 50 percent discount today.

“We would just like to thank everyone for their support over all these 52 years,” Simon said. “We appreciate everything they’ve done for us.”

The Faulkner County Homeschool basketball team has qualified as the 15th seed for the National Homeschool Tournament next week at Oklahoma City, Okla. Members are Daniel Lipsmeyer, Ben Lawrence, Josh Yancy, Wesley Bowlin, Alex Kemper, Michael Mayo, Kevin Helm, Andrew Sheridan, Daniel Wolf, Kris Watson, Tanner Hubbard, assistant coach Jerome Wolf and coach Paul Sheridan.
