Mrs. McHarley Smith entertained a group of 14 at a prettily planned diner Wednesday evening at her home on Locust Avenue in honor of the birthday anniversary of her daughter, Miss Edna Smith. The table was laid with snowy damask and decorated with jonquils. A dainty menu in courses was served, and after dinner Mrs. Smith accompanied the group to the theatre, where they enjoyed a play.

Marine Pvt. Randy L. Gordey, son of Mr. and Mrs. H.V. Gordey of Conway completed individual combat training recently at the Second Infantry Training Regiment, Marine Corps Base in Camp Pendleton, Calif. He received training in tactical problems and developed his individual fighting skills during the four-week course.

Air Force Staff Sgt. Mark D. Cavender has been awarded the Joint Service Commendation Medal in Washington, D.C.

Cavender is a communications computer system operations operator at the 7th Communications Group at the Pentagon.

He is a son of Ercell F. Cavender of Quitman and Duida N. Cavender of Conway. He is a 1981 graduate of Conway High School.

The Conway Volleyball Club’s 13-year-old team recently won second place in the Conway Slamfest 13’s Gold Bracket. Members are Ashley Cyr, Whitney West, Danielle Young, Rosalie Meriweather, Kayleigh Ratliff, Lindesy Boone, JoLeigh McManis, Jordan Berry, Jenny Beth Davis, coach Heather Law and assistant coach Hilary Watts.
