The Sideline: UCA cross country honors and Arkansas Golden Gloves

UCA’s Cassar, Setzler earn SLC honors

Sophomore Brooke Cassar headed the list of University of Central Arkansas track and field athletes named as All-Southland Conference Indoor honorees on Thursday.

Cassar, from Woonona, New South Wales, Australia, was a first-team selection for winning the 5,000 meters, and also earned second-team honors as part of the second-place distance medley relay squad. She picked up third-team honors for a third-place finish in the 3,000 meters.

Senior Erika Setzler of Conway was a second-team selection for finishing runnerup in the 5,000 meters. Freshman Marine Lecart from Waterloo, Belgium, earned third-team honors for her third-place finish in the mile run. Lecart, Khadijah Smith and Jordan Chadwick made up the remainder of the distance medley team that earned second-team All-SLC honors.

On the men’s side, sophomore Corentin Louis of Fratin, Luxembourg, Belgium, was a second-team All-SLC selection after finishing as runnerup in the mile run.

The top-three finishers in each event earned All-Southland Conference honors. The winner earned first-team honors, the second-place finisher earned second-team accolades while third-place finishers are honored with third-team awards.

Arkansas Golden Gloves this weekend

The Arkansas Golden Gloves boxing tournament will be contested Friday and Saturday at the North Little Rock Community Center, 2700 Willow.

Boxers representing 20 Arkansas cities and towns will compete, according to tournament director Ray Rodgers.

Champions will advance to the Mid-South Golden Gloves in North Little Rock, April 10-12.

Bouts begin at 7 p.m. each evening. Admission is $8 for adults and $6 for students.
