UCA teams begin road swing

The University of Central Arkansas Sugar Bears will try to clinch a share of the Southland Conference title while the Bears will try to keep alive their outside hopes for a postseason tournament berth with a two-game road swing, beginning Thursday night against Northwestern State at Natchitoches, La.

A victory over the Lady Demons (16-12, 9-7) would clinch at least a tie for the SLC regular-season title for the Sugar Bears (18-9, 12-4) and the likely No. 1 seed in the postseason tournament. UCA closes the regular season Saturday in Nacogdoches, Texas, against Stephen F. Austin, another team in title contention.

The Bears (8-19, 5-11) will likely have to win out to gain the eight-team SLC tournament, depending somewhat on how Southeastern Louisiana finishes in its final two games. Northwestern State is 14-17, 10-6 while SFA is undefeated in conference play with a 27-game winning streak.

Michael Brown joins UCA soccer staff

Michael Brown, a former assistant for national junior college champion Iowa Western, has joined the University of Central Arkansas soccer staff as Brown played for Benedictine College from 2007-10 He has worked with Iowa Western, Council Bluffs Football Club, and Leavenworth United. He has also worked camps for Creighton, Hastings, Central Arkansas, and Iowa Western, where he served as camp coordinator.

“Coach (Jordan) Carver gave Michael a lot of responsibility at Iowa Western,” said UCA coach Ross Duncan.” They run a great program up there and Michael was a big part of their success. Between his recruiting, travel, equipment, and team training experience, we will be able to rely on Michael for a lot. He’s already taking on some big video projects and making an impact on the team.”
