Ellen Smith Elementary School kindergarten teacher Betty Courtway reacted to a surprise birthday presentation in her honor yesterday before the student body. Lured outside by an apparent fire drill, Mrs. Courtway learned the true reason for the assembly of students and teachers when students began singing “Happy Birthday.” Faculty and staff presented the educator and bird-watcher with a purple martin birdhouse constructed by Dub McGibbony of Conway. The house will be erected at the school.

After losing eight seniors to graduation last spring, the Greenbrier High School baseball team will rely heavily on several new faces to accomplish its goal of being one of the top teams in the AAAA-West again.

The Panthers finished 22-5 overall and 13-1 in conference play last season.

They were the AAAA-West conference champions and advanced to the AAAA state quarterfinals, where they fell to Batesville.

The Panthers only have one senior returning. Brandon Moreland played third base and pitched for GHS in 2003, but he’s recovering from an injury suffered playing basketball and will be out for two to three more weeks.
