The Sideline: UCA basketball homestanding; Hendrix honors and Mayflower baseball

UCA begins final homestand

University of Central Arkansas basketball teams will play their final home games of the season Thursday and Saturday at the Farris Center.

Thursday, the UCA Sugar Bears (17-8, 11-3) will try to maintain a one-game lead in the Southland Conference standings against Sam Houston State (11-14, 6-8).

The Sugar Bears lead Lamar by one game and the Lady Cardinals come to Conway for the second game of the homestand Saturday afternoon.

Thursday’s game against Sam Houston begins at 5:30 p.m.

In the nightcap Thursday, the men’s teams from UCA and Sam Houston State will play.

The Bearkats (19-7, 11-3) are battling for one of the top spots for the SLC tournament. The Bears (6-19, 3-11) have lost four in a row.

Hendrix players get national honors

Hendrix College seniors Collin Radack and Thomas Weber have been named to D3Baseball.com’s National Team of the Week.

Radack, a center fielder from Austin, Texas, extended his hitting streak to eight games as he hit .455 (10-of-22) with seven runs scored, two doubles, a home run, four RBIs and three stolen bases in the leadoff spot, helping the Warriors go 3-1 on the week.

Weber, a right-handed pitcher from Gatesville, Texas, struck out seven while allowing one hit and three walks in seven scoreless innings to pick up the win against Wabash on Sunday. He also hit .438 (7-of-16) with six runs scored, six RBIs and a double in four games last week.

Hendrix will open Southern Athletic Association play at Rhodes College in Memphis on Saturday.

Maumelle defeats Mayflower in baseball

MAYFLOWER — Maumelle defeated Mayflower, 11-5, in the teams’ baseball opener Wednesday.

Maumelle took an early 3-0 lead but the Egles tied the game in the bottom of the third on singles by Tyler Godwin, Michael Post, Tyler Herrin and Trey Bradley.

Maumelle took advantage of five Eagle errors in the fourth to score 6 runs and take a 9-3 advantage. The Eagles would close the gap in the fifth on hits by Post and Herrin coupled with a two-run triple by Bradley to make it 9-5. The Hornets scored two in the seventh.

Post who went 4 for 4 and Bradley and Herrin who each went 2 for 4 and combined for five RBIs.

Hendrix’s Sheets get tennis honor

Hendrix College junior Robert Sheets has been selected as the Southern Athletic Association Men’s Tennis Player of the Week.

Sheets, from San Franisco, went 2-0 at No. 1 singles for the Warriors last week. He knocked off Austin College’s top player Friday, then followed with a 6-2, 3-6, 1-0 (10-8) victory over Eliot Blatt of Rhodes on Sunday.

The Player of the Week is the second in Sheets’ career.

ASU takes 6-1 tennis win over UCA

JONESBORO — Arkansas State powered to a 6-1 victory over the University of Central Arkansas tennis team Tuesday.

Arkansas State (2-3) picked up victories in two of the three doubles matches to grab the point for doubles play. In singles play, Krizia Buck was the only Bear able to earn a victory.

UCA will host Northeastern State University at 2 p.m. Saturday before playing Southwest Baptist at noon on Sunday.
