E.C. Smith of Magnolia defeated L.H. Hartley of Vilonia in the finals of the Class A Division to win the Arkansas Checker Association tournament at the A.O.U.W. hall in North Little Rock last night.

Mr. Smith and Mr. Hartley reached the last round by scoring 30 points each in regular tourney competition.

The State Teachers Bears and the Southern State Muleriders were even for 35 minutes of their battle here Friday night. The Bears were prohibitive in the other five. They won, 79-67, and got a tie for second place in the AIC with Arkansas Tech.

The five-minute period that decided it was at the start of the second half.

Conway firefighter Mike Tackett shoveled a mixture of sand and dirt to reduce vapors and absorb a chemical spill yesterday at Mel-Hart Products Inc. on Harrison Street. According to a fire department report, about 75 gallons of acetone was spilled while offloading the liquid outside the plant. Firefighters and employees assisted in cleaning up the spill. No injuries or fires were reported and no evacuation was necessary.

Harris Johnson Concrete Construction Inc. and Harris Johnson Masonry celebrated the grand opening of a new location with ribbon-cutting ceremonies recently. The business is now located at926 Highway 225 East. Attending the ceremony were Harris Johnson, Chris Johnson, Greenbrier Mayor Melton Cotton and Matt Johnson.
