(1939)

The birth of a son, Wilburn Garland Ward, to Mr. and Mrs. Odis Ward on Feb. 7 brought happiness to 10 living grandparents and great-grandparents of the child.

Mr. Ward is a son of Mr. and Mrs. E. Garland Ward and his wife is a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. W.C. Burroughs. The great-grandparents are Mr. and Mrs. J.M. Hutchins, Mr. and Mrs. W.R. Odom and Mr. and Mrs. W.H. Burroughs — four out of a possible four living grandparents and six out of a possible eight living great-grandparents for the baby.

Howard Qualls, formerly of Conway, has been promoted to assistant vice president of the First National Bank in Shreveport, La.

Qualls, 29, son of Mr. and Mrs. A.L. Qualls of this city, will continue as assistant manager of the Cedar Grove branch.

Mrs. Qualls is the former Rebecca Jane Hogan of Morrilton. The couple has three children, Stephen, Teresa and Barry.

Homer A. Brown of Conway, band director emeritus at the University of Central Arkansas, will be inducted Saturday into the Arkansas Bandmaster’s Hall of Fame.

Brown, who directed UCA bands affectionately termed “Homer’s Heroes” for 25 years, began his career in 1947 at Warren High School and subsequently taught at Conway High School from 1950 to 1953, Arkansas Tech University from 1953 to 1955, and Rayville, La., High School from 1955 to 1958. In 1958, Brown became band director at UCA. He retired in 1983.

Brown is the 11th director named to the Hall of Fame.

Brittany Carpenter, the 2003 Yearbook Queen, crowns Emily Duncan as the 2004 Yearbook Queen at this year’s Conway High School Beauty Revue. Duncan is a senior at Conway High School-West and a daughter of Gary and Patrice Duncan.
