UCA teams begin homestand Thursday

The University of Central Arkansas Sugar Bears will try to hold on to a slight lead in the Southland Conference women’s race Thursday night with a game against Southeastern Louisiana at the Farris Center.

It begins a two-game homestand for UCA teams against teams from Louisiana.

The Sugar Bears (7-2, 13-6) are a half-game ahead of Lamar (7-3) and a game ahead of Nicholls State and Stephen F. Austin (6-3).

It’s also a big game for the Lady Lions (5-3, 6-14), who have won two in a row and have a chance to move among the leaders. SE Louisiana is 2-10 on the road this season.

The game will begin at 5:30 p.m. with the men’s game to follow.

The UCA men (2-7, 5-15) are 10th in the standings. SE Louisiana (4-5, 10-12) is tied for ninth and is 3-7 in away games.

UCA teams play SLC newcomer University of New Orleans on Saturday.

St. Joseph edges Sacred Heart

St. Joseph’s junior boys squeaked out a 48-45 overtime victory over Sacred Heart on Monday.

David Beck led the Bulldogs (13-7) with 16 points and eight rebounds. Daniel Lee Kordsmeier had 15 points and four assists. Brad Vandivere added seven points, three assists and two steals. Triple Williams had six points and five rebounds. Jacob Welter, five rebounds, and Zach Martin, two assists, two steals, also cracked the stat column for St. Joseph.

St. Joseph won the junior girls game 41-24. Joanie Elsinger led with 19 points. Rachel Prall added eight and Amber Briggler, five.
