Wives of the soil conservation service staff had their weekly party Thursday afternoon at the home of Mrs. DeWitt Huckaby on Independence Street, with Mrs. Christopher as co-hostess. Prizes were won by Mrs. Larson, Mrs. Fancher and Mrs. Irving.

The Rev. C.J. Wells was installed as worshipful master of Greenbrier Lodge No. 209, Free and Accepted Masons, in a ceremony Dec. 27.

Floyd Hooten of Conway was installing officers.

Other officers also installed included: Gene Wells, senior warden; W.D. (Joe) Hall, junior warden; Daniel Bruce, senior deacon; Bill P. Tyler, junior deacon; Roy Sims, secretary; Cecil Glenn, treasurer; Joe T. Robinson and A.A. Williams, masters of ceremonies; and Dalphie Graham, tyler.

The Guy-Perkins senior boys advanced to the finals of the Perryville High School Basketball Tournament last night with a 73-68 win over Wonderview.

(2004)

A plume of black, acrid smoke that could be seen as far as 30 miles away billowed over the southern part of the city for several hours before the fire was brought under control in the middle of the afternoon at Detco Industries, Inc. plant in the industrial park on Tuesday.

Workers and residents were evacuated in about a one-mile stretch downwind of the plant in an area bordered by Bruce Street on the north, Industrial Boulevard to the south, Harkrider Street to the west and Interstate 40 to the east.

Bielema maneuvers to get receiver on scholarship track

ROGERS - From Arkansas coach Bret Bielema’s address to the press before joining some of his assistants golfing among former Razorbacks and Razorback Foundation members at Monday’s Northwest Arkansas Razorback Club event at Shadow Valley Country Club, it was learned the Razorbacks have added a receiver but won’t have one of their new scholarship defensive backs practicing when preseason drills commence Thursday.
