One of the last remnants of a bygone era will slip from the downtown Conway scene in the next few months, when Simon’s grocery store closes its doors.

George and Fritz Simon, brothers and co-owners of the store at 814 Front St., will begin liquidating their stock tomorrow and expect the process to take two to three months.

The Simon brothers said the decision to close the 52-year-old store was not made on the spur of the moment, but had been discussed “for practically a year.”

They cited the difficulty of competing with the large supermarket chains and the immediate need for extensive remodeling as the primary reasons behind the decision to close the store.
