SHERWOOD — St. Joseph’s boys opened their basketball season Thursday with a 64-50 victory over Lisa Academy.
Drake Cooper led with 17 points and six rebounds. Dylan Schrekenhofer added 16 points and six rebounds. Taylor Schrekenhofer and Williams Fields had eight points, Landon Enderlin had five points and five assists. Nash Nichols had four rebounds. Fields had eight assists.
“It was a tough style to play against for our first game,” said St. Joseph coach Brent Bruich. “I was happy with our effort of both teams. We learned a lot about ourselves. We had some mistakes that can easily be corrected with game experience.”
St. Joseph won the JV game, 36-31. David Beck had 15 points, five rebounds and five assists. Daniel Lee Kordsmeier had nine points and four steals. Brad Vandivere and Gage Berger had five points. Triple Williams had five rebounds and Jacob Welter three rebounds.
Conway tuned up for the 7A state volleyball tournament Thursday with a 25-23, 25-8, 25-9 victory over Class 5A Little Rock Christian.
Allison Weatherly had seven kills and three blocks for the Lady Cats, (22-5, 11-3). Courtney Campbell had nine kills, Rachel Skinner, 13 digs and Sara Nethercutt, 33 assists and five aces. Maddie Pressley added eight kills and Bailey McKee, five digs, a block and an ace.
Conway’s JV (16-2, 12-2) won 25-19, 25-13.
Mackenzie Dear had four kills and four digs. Jada Grubbs added four kills. Morgan Mourot had six assists and McKenzie Hart five and a block. Sydney Trickett had three aces.
The Lady Cats will play the Bentonville-Mount St. Mary winner in the state tournament at Cabot at 2 p.m. Wednesday.
Marissa Collins had a career-high 56 assists Thursday in leading the University of Central Arkansas volleyball tram to a 25-17, 25-23, 24-26, 25-21 victory over Houston Baptist at the Prince Center.
Central Arkansas (18-3, 10-0 SLC) outhit Houston Baptist (10-13, 5-6 SLC) .259 to .231 on the night, led by freshman Fulani Petties, who had a .348 hitting percentage and tallied 12 kills. Heather Schnars led Central Arkansas with a match-high 15 kills and Kyle Hartman added 11. Collins added six digs, three blocks, and two kills. Shelbee Berringer led the Sugar Bear defense with 23 digs and Scout Brooks chipped in 12 more.
The Sugar Bears return to action at noon Saturday, hosting Texas A&M-Corpus Christi at noon at the Prince Center.
ST. JOSEPH VOLLEYBALL
SHERWOOD — Sylvan Hills defeated St. Joseph’s volleyball team, 25-23, 13-25, 25-23, 22-25, 15-9 Thursday night.
Megan Briggler had 13 assists for the Lady Bulldogs (21-6). Holly Rega had six assists and three blocks. Linzy Hoelzeman and Rachel Briggler were service leaders. Rachel Briggler added 32 assists. Sydney Spradlin had 34 digs and Hoelzeman 22.
Sylvan Hills won the JV game, 25-16, 25-22.
“I kind of feel we gave one away,” said St. Joseph coach Luke Davis. “Sylvan Hills is a pretty good team, but we made a lot of mistakes. This was great preparation for our (Class 2A) state tournament.
“Even though our JV team did not win, I’m very proud of the strides they made this year. They were all freshmen plus one sophomore and they lost four games all year. I expect a lot from them in the future.”
