OVERLAND PARK, Kan. — Sophomore James Newton earned medalist honors Tuesday and helped the University of Central Arkansas Bears win the UMKC Bill Ross Intercollegiate at Milburn Golf and Country Club.
Newton, from Macclesfield, England, shot 67-75-69 for a 5-under 211, tying Oklahoma Christian’s Alasdair Dalgliesh in regulation before winning in a playoff. UCA junior Pep Angles tied for third overall at 73-68-72-213. Freshman James Steven shot 74-74-75-223 and tied for 19th, while senior Richard Farmer tied for 38th (75-73-78-226). Sophomore Jacob Oaks finished 77th (83-80-77-240).
UCA finished with a three-round total of 872, edging Oklahoma Christian by a stroke. Lousiana-Monroe was third (882), followed by Denver (883), Wichita State (889), UMKC (891), Northern Iowa (893), Arkansas State (894), Missouri State (897), Oral Roberts (901), Air Force (904), SIU-Edwardsville (906), Drake (908), Creighton (913) and Western Illinois (919).
UCA WOMEN’S GOLF
JONESBORO — University of Central Arkansas sophomore Sarah Brown finished third and her team finished fourth on Tuesday at the Arkansas State Lady Red Wolf Classic played at Sage Meadows Country Club.
Brown, a sophomore from Mount Pleasant, Texas, shot rounds of 68-72-76 for a even-par 216. Junior Malin Senneryd was 13th (74-78-76-228), while senior Carly Dear was 18th (77-79-78-234). Sophomore Frida Svensson tied for 24th (81-81-79-241) and freshman Eliza Axelsen was 26th (83-81-79-243).
Louisiana-Monroe won the tournament with an 880 total, followed by Western Kentucky (894), Arkansas State (901), UCA (919), New Orleans (946), McLennan CC (947) and Arkansas State ‘B’ (996).
ST. JOSEPH VOLLEYBALL
St. Joseph’s volleyball team clinched second place in district Monday night with a 25-14 25-14, 25-11 victory over Mayflower at the St. Joseph Family Activity Center.
Meagan Briggler had seven kills for the Lady Bulldogs. Linzy Hoelzeman was 23 of 24 on serves. Rachel Briggler had 18 assists. Sydney Spradln had 14 digs.
“We’re playing to make the state tournament,” said coach Luke Davis. “We have to find ways to improve the next couple of games and stay focused.”
ALEXANDRIA, La. — The Hendrix College men’s golf team broke their team scoring record twice at the Louisiana College Fall Tournament at the Links on the Bayou on Monday and Tuesday.
The Warriors shot a 312-309-621 to finish fifth. The previous lowest round since joining NCAA Division III was 317 in a duel against Dallas in 2012.
Freshman Kevin Austrian paced the Warriors with a 77-75-152, tying for 17th. Senior Travis Weeks tied for 20th with an 81-74-155 and junior John Weirich fired an 80-77-157, tying for 26th. Freshman Greg Lanese tied for 29th with a 74-85-159 and junior Cory Ziegler had an 85-83-168, placing 39th.
Defending national champion UT Tyler won the tournament with a two-round score of 574, followed by Texas Lutheran (577), Louisiana College (583), UT Dallas (607), Hendrix (621), Mississippi College (622) and LeTourneau (631).
The Hendrix women only sent two players to the tourney. Junior Kelsi McClure finished 12th with a 104-97-201. Sophomore Trilby Gibson finished 15th with a 117-124-241.
