(1938)

First services were held last night in the new Methodist church at Mayflower, the first building to be erected by the denomination in that community. Heirs of the late J.E. Martin of Conway donated and abandoned school building on plot of land deeded to the school district by Mr. Martin with a reversion clause, and the material was used in constructing a new church near the new school and the new highway on a lot donated by Marion Berry.

50 years ago

(1963)

Harry Gatling’s sixth grade class at Sallie Cone Elementary School has elected officers for the first semester of the 1963-64 school year. They are Clay Lamey, president; Jim Lyons, vice president; Laura Burford, secretary; Gerald Garrison, treasurer; Val Fraser, reporter; Cathy Smith, entertainment chairman; and Judy Warren, program chairman.

(1988)

William B. Evans, son of Doris A. Cullum of Conway, was recently promoted to private first class in the Army. The 1987 graduate of Conway High School is an infantryman at Fort Bragg, N.C., with the 504th Infantry Regiment.

(2003)

St. Joseph won another girls 5AA-North district golf tournament Tuesday, and the Bulldogs will get their chance today.

The Lady Bulldogs rolled at The First Tee in Little Rock by 43 strokes. St. Joseph won with 144, followed by Little Rock Abundant Life, 187; and Mount Vernon-Enola, 189.

Those three teams plus the next six individuals will advance to the Class AA Region 3 Tournament at Hot Springs Country Club’s Majestic Course on Saturday.
