Bears drop in both FCS polls
After a 59-28 loss to McNeese State, the University of Central Arkansas Bears dropped in both FCS polls.
They dropped from 11th to 14th in the coaches poll. They dropped from 14th to 20th in the writers poll.
Two-time defending national champion North Dakota State is first in both polls.
UCA freshman 5th in Chili Pepper
Freshman Brooke Cassar finished fifth overall at the prestigious Arkansas Chile Pepper Cross Country Festival on Saturday at Fayetteville, leading the University of Central Arkansas women’s team to a third-place tie in the 15-team University division in the cross country race.
The UCA men, led by junior Jonathan Burgess’ 41st-place finish, came in eighth out of 14 NCAA Division I squads.
Cassar, from Woonona, New South Wales, Australia, turned in a time of 17:14.4 over the 5K course, trailing only four University of Arkansas runners. Senior Erika Setzler of Conway finished ninth in 17:29.5, as she and Cassar were the only non-Arkansas runners to finish in the Top 10. Senior Kayla Nehus was 27th in a time of 18:34, followed by freshman Brigette Caruthers in 34th (18:51.8) and freshman Marine Lecart in 39th (19:05).
On the men’s side, Burgess, from Queensland, Australia, finished in 26:06.1 over the 8K course. Senior Amos Gerber was 49th in a time of 26:25.2. Freshman Grant Williams finished 72nd (27:06.8), while junior Connor Ryan was 74th (27:07) and sophomore Albert Maeder was 76th (27:11.9).
UCA volleyball players honored
UCA volleyball playes Heather Schnars and Shelbee Berringer have been honored with Southland Conference Awars for their play last week.
Schnars is Offensive Player of the Week and Shelbee Berringer earned Defensive Player of the Week honors.
Schnars had 13 kills and 10 digs for her first double-double of the season against Northwestern State. Against Stephen F. Austin, she had a match-high 16 kills while adding seven digs, three blocks, and two aces.
Berringer, from Dickinson, Texas, averaged 6.29 digs per set to help Central Arkansas hold its opponents to a .113 hitting percentage.
