The University of Central Arkansas Sugar Bears defeated Florida Gulf Coast, 17-25, 27-25, 27-25, 26-24, victory Friday in the 2013 Hilton Garden Inn/Homewood Suites Airport Volleyball Classic at Fort Myers, Fla.
The Sugar Bears (7-1) got production from all over the court in the victory, with four players turning in double-digit kills. Heather Schnars led the team with 12 kills, followed by Jessica Nagy with 11, and Scout Brooks and Paige Gantar, who each had 10. Brooks also collected 16 digs to earn the double-double. Marissa Collins paced the Central Arkansas offense with 48 assists while Shlebee Berringer led the defense with 24 digs.
Central Arkansas returns to the court at 9 a.m. Saturday against third-ranked Penn State. They will finish the tournament Saturday afternoon against Marquette.
CARL STUART VOLLEYBALL
Carl Stuart Middle School went 3-1 in volleyball matches last week.
Against Beebe, the Lady Kittens won, 25-12, 25-16. Lauren Murphy scored 14 points from serves, Julia Razor and Kate Pillow also scored eight. Jessica Gunnells had five attacks and three tips. Jastyn Vickers had five digs.
Conway won the B game, 25-15, 25-14. Mackenzie Mahan and Berris Teague scored seven points off serves. Kayla Bynum scored nine from serves. Anna Reed and Matti Fairchild each had two digs.
Against Bob Courtway Middle School, CSMS (3-4) lost 25-15, 17-25, 6-15. Gunnells served 14 points and Vickers eight. Gunnells added four hits and three digs. Henley Masters had four hits. Vickers and Pillow had two digs. Kennedy Carter had three assists.
Carl Stuart won the B game, 25-16, 25-21. Taylor Lemieux scored 15 points from serves. Madi Davis scored six. Cassidy Webb and Fairchild had three.
RUTH DOYLE vs. RAY SIMON VOLLEYBALL
In the first volleyball game ever at Ruth Doyle Middle School, the seventh-grade girls team won the A game against Simon Thursday night, 25-14,17-25, 15-12. Asiyha Smith led with five aces and three digs. Blaklee Scott and Olivia Parker had two aces apiece.
The B team girls for Ruth Doyle lost Simon to Simon, 25-23, 13-25, 15-9. Gabriella Johnson led all players for the night with 13 aces, while McKinley Young had five digs.
CCS JUNIOR FOOTBALL
ROSE BUD — Conway Christian opened its junior high football season Thursday with a 44-12 victory over Rose Bud.
Will Jackson scored two touchdowns. Quarterback Robbie Hog passed for one touchdown and ran for another. Seth Smith added a touchdown on a 60-yard sweep. Bennett Pascoe had a reception for a touchdown.
Rose Bud won the seventh-grade game, 12-6, wi9th the game called off at the half because of lightning. Jacob Wood scored the Eagles’ touchdown on a 29-yard run.
