Hendrix volleyball gets academic award
The Hendrix College volleyball team earned the American Volleyball Coaches Association Team Academic Award for compiling a 3.45 grade0-point average during the 2012-13 academic year.
To earn the award, a team must have at least a 3.30 cumulative GPA.
Under head coach Ryan Meek, the Warriors were one of two teams in the Southern Athletic Association to earn the honor.
UCA’s Sassar honored by conference
University of Central Arkansas’ Brooke Cassar has been named the Southland Conference Women’s Cross Country Athlete of the Week.
Cassar, from Woonona, New South Wales, Australia, won the Brooks Memphis Twilight race on Saturday at the Mike Rose Complex in Memphis. She covered the 5K in 17:26.51, breaking the school record by more than 35 seconds. She led UCA to a tie for third place in the meet.
Cassar, a freshman in cross country, won the 10,000 meters at the SLC Outdoor Championships last spring with a stadium-record 36:12.47 at McNeese State’s Cameron Communications Track & Field Complex.
Greenbrier player receives tryout
Paxton Wallace, a ninth-grader at Greenbrier High School, was selected to compete in the Rawlings Prospect Series in the USA Baseball National Team Identification Series.
He is among 150 players who will compete for a spot on the 14-and-under USA National Team.
He will participate on the Midwest Regional team in the event at Cary, N.C.
