Those stepping to the plate for a Miracle League ballfield in Conway hope to get an extra-base hit in October.
During World Series time, a baseball-themed fundraiser will be at 6 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 24 at the Old Gin/Hole in the Wall Cafe in downtown Conway.
Special guests will be University of Central Arkansas baseball coach Allen Gum and members of the 2013 team that won a Southland Conference tournament championship and reached an NCAA regional.
Dinner will consist of ballpark food (hamburgers and hot dogs with the fixings provided by Centennial Bank), and guests will be encouraged to wear UCA gear or that of their favorite baseball team. Game 2 of the World Series will be shown on a big screen television.
There will be a silent auction that will include sports and non-sports related items that include a luxury suite for 16 at a 2014 Arkansas Travelers game and a Pete Rose autographed bat.
Tickets are $25 in advance and $30 at the door. Advance tickets are available at the Log Cabin Democrat, Randy’s Sporting Goods and The Fieldhouse.
Tickets can also be purchased by mailing a check made out to “Miracle League” to David Grimes, 344 Pippinpost Dr., Conway, 72034.
The Miracle League Field for special needs athletes is proposed for Curtis Walker Park. Cost of the project, which includes a special-surface, handicap accessible field and bleachers and a playground area, is $600,000. Organizers hope enough funds will be raised to begin play on the field in 2014.
