Basketball roundup: Vilonia girls hold off Harrison in shootout

Vilonia’s Lady Eagles won a back-and-forth scrap with Harrison on Friday night, emerging with their 20th victory of the season, 58-51.

The Lady Eagles (20-1, 8-0) trailed by nine points early, then took a 30-28 lead at the half and saw the score tied at 37 after three quarters.

The final quarter was a shootout with the lead changing hands several times as Harrison hit three 3’s in the quarter, but Vilonia answered with five 3’s of its own. After managing a five-point lead late in the fourth, Vilonia was able to seal the victory with six straight free throws.

Vilonia will host Morrilton Tuesday and travel to Huntsville on Friday.

FAULKNER FALCONS

The Faulkner Falcons 16-and-under home school team won two games last week.

They defeated the Saline Country Warriors, 59-53. Daniel McNair lead the Falcons with 28 points. Mark Baker Blake Murphy and Aaron Griffin each had eight and Stephen McNair added five. John Suitt finished with two points.

The Falcsons defeated the Fort Smith Patriots, 50-42. Baker led with 14 points and McNair added 13. Also scoring were: Griffin, 10; Stephen McNair, seven; and Timothy Simms, six. Suitt and Edward Crockett had strong overall games.

The Falcons host the Little Rock Flames on Thursday and the Pine Bluff Thunder on Friday.

VILONIA 7TH BOYS

The Vilonia seventh-grade boys basketball team split two games in the Cabot South Invitational Tournament on Saturday. Little Rock Christian defeated Vilonia, 25-20. The Eagles outscored the Warriors 16-7 in the second half. The Eagles were led in scoring by Tyson Wertz with six points, followed by Triston Milligan with four, Hunter Neely, Brody Johnson, Ethan Janski, Trey McNespey, and Jeremy Kendall, two each.

The Eagles defeated the Hornets from Bethel Junior High of Bryant 25-13 in the second round game. Hunter Neely, who had four points for the game, hit a last-second, 3-pointer to put the Eagles on top 12-8 at half.

The Eagles’ momentum continued in the second half as their defensive pressure intensified and they outscored the Hornets, 13-5, the second half. The Eagles were led in scoring by Tyson Wertz with six, followed by Cody Mitchell with five, Ethan Janski with four, Milligan, Kendall, and Trenton Hetherington, two each. Other strong defensive efforts include Johnson, Cody Simpson, Caleb Johnson, McNespey, and Noah Heston.   

 

VILONIA 7TH GIRLS

The seventh-grade Lady Eagles won the Cabot Invitational Tournament by winning three games.

In pool play the Lady Eagles defeated Cabot South B by the score, 35-7 and Bryant Bethel, 23-10.

In the championship game, the Lady Eagles defeated Cabot South A, 25-19. Callie Eary led the scoring for the day with 17 points. Alexis Burnham scored 14 points. Kenna Beaty scored 10 points. Grace Vanlandingham and Anna Kaye Kirk scored eight points each. Aaliyah Cash had seven points.  Kaityn Weaver scored six points. Alyssa Netherlain and Brynn Schuetter scored four points each.  Sydney Johnson and Tori Wilbanks scored two points each.
