The accumulation of snow during the past few days has been a winter wonderland for some — those who could afford to stay home from work, relishing the sight of the pristine drifts as they snuggle by a warm fire.

But for some — those whose jobs and responsibilities are critical to the health and well-being of others — the snowfall has been a challenge.

Faulkner County resident Marilyn Masingill met the challenge in an unusual way — on horseback.

As head nurse for the intensive care nursery and the pediatric unit at St. Vincent Infirmary Medical Center, Mrs. Masingill’s presence at work was critical. But, she and her husband, Woodie, who live about three-and-a-half miles south of Conway, were snowed in.

Not to be deterred, they saddled up two horses and rode more than three miles to the home of a neighbor who owned a four-wheel drive vehicle. The neighbor then transported Mrs. Masingill to the hospital.

Bob Courtway Middle School students recently raised $500 to purchase a heifer for Heifer Project International. Students learned how gifts of animals, technology and education around the world give others a better life. The recipient of the heifer promises to pass on the first offspring to another needy family. Mike Schnaar, ranch director, accepted the check from the students. Social Studies teacher Julie Hill visited two Heifer Project villages in China last summer. Some of the students participating included Megan Wesley, Callie Phelps, Kelsey Reed, Michael McCoy, Kaylen Stevenson, Travis Alexander, Jett Harrell and David Tyler.
