The fire that destroyed Hotel Bachelor here New Year’s Eve night started on the third floor, Wilson Drews, chief of the Conway Fire Department, said today.

Drews said Elbert L. Perkins, about 60, who occupied room No. 41 at the east end of the third floor hall, told him that he was awakened by an explosion and that within a minute a second explosion occurred.

Other persons reported hearing explosions. Some, however, said they thought the noise came from a transformer going out of operation.

Firemen battled the blaze for more than 15 hours and a few men remained on duty until 3 a.m. today.
