Ark. court rejects casino measure for Nov. ballot

Posted: October 4, 2012 - 9:10am

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP) — The Arkansas Supreme Court has rejected a proposed ballot measure to give a professional poker player the exclusive right to operate casinos in the state.

The court ordered that no votes be counted in Nancy Todd's proposed constitutional amendment to allow casino gambling. The proposed amendment would have given Todd the right to operate casinos in four Arkansas counties.

The court ruled that signatures gathered were invalid because she revised her ballot measure after gathering them.

Officials had rejected the proposal from the November ballot after they said it didn't tell voters it would prohibit electronic gambling at a horse track in Hot Springs and a dog track in West Memphis. Todd had revised the language of her proposal to say it may repeal the law allow the electronic gambling.

Yep

Go try to mooch off of another state.

If someone wants to propose a ballot initiative to legalize casinos in Arkansas then that's one thing. But to propose a ballot initiative saying that you will be the sole operator of all casinos in the state is another.

I was filling my car up with gas one day a few months back and someone came up to me asking me to sign a petition to allow casinos. His sales pitch was all about legalizing casinos. He didn't mention anything about who would or would not be allowed to operate them. I wonder if it was this lady's proposal or that guy from Texas.

You should have whipped out a petition for your proposed a ballot initiative saying that you will be the sole operator of all gas staions in the state.
Makes about as much sense.

Exactly

Trying to legalize a monopoly FTW!

I wonder if this lady would be as willing to back a ballot initiative that legalized casinos and allowed anyone to operate one? You know, since she is so concerned about giving us the right to freely gamble. Something tells me no.
